Brushes
It was suggested to me to use brushes for practice instead of buying a practice pad (for noise reduction) Anyone use brushes? Do they ear your heads out quicker than sticks? Thanks MF

Brush playing is different from stick playing, so I wouldn't suggest practicing brushes
instead of stick playing. You use other techniques, other motions, you're after different sounds, and it feels very different.

Brushes aren't a substitute for drum sticks - they're a very different thing all together. As said above, the motions are different, the techniques and sounds produced are all very different.
If you're looking to reduce volume a little, try multi-sticks/hotrods. If you're looking to practice stick technique then there really is no substitute for using sticks, whether on a head, practice pad or a silencer pad on a drum.

Difficult problem, how to play drums quietly, i am about to try the lidwish ultra tones, i will let you know how that goes if you want.
Currently to keep the volume down its a case of using a flix stick on the hi hat or ride and a flix classic brush ont he snare, but as people have said, brushes really require a different technique, the only thing i will say is the flix brushes do have a kind of rebound effect, the flix sticks however do not.

I said i would get back when i had tried the Lidwish Ultra Tones and so here i am, THEY ARE the solution if you want to play acoustic drums quietly they are just phenominal, heavy hitters or deaf drummers need not apply, but for neighbour friendly drumming without those tone robbing pads, these are the answer, trust me. This is how good they are, the old model, the classics, were often reported as being too quet... yes, too quiet! The beauty of this product is that you can change the volume from quiet to loud depending on how far the tip is pulled out of the stick. Seriously,, i will never understand how rubber pads on drums ever took off when these are the real answer.

No, but lets say you want to play your drumkit and cymbals at a volume that nobody will complain about wihout taking away any of its tone, then Lidwsih Ultra Tones are for you.
Just because your hypocrit neighour likes to use his 2 stroke lawn mower doesn't mean he won't complain about your drum playing of coarse.
