Default Recording Yourself

Something I wish I had done years ago is to start recording my practice and live gigs. I never put too much thought into it when I was younger and thought I knew what I was doing. My practice and the music I listened to back then was progressive rock, King Crimson, Yes, ELP etc. So for me playing top 40 and disco music it was a piece of cake so why bother to really listen to that music. Listen just to hear the arraingement and then add my own drumming to it.

Flash forward 25 years and listen back to some old recordings and WOW, not that what I played was all bad but I sure would have done things different. Likeb really listen to what I'm playing and practice to a metronome.

I guess where I'm going with this rant is how important it is to play for the song. Listen to the other players in the band and make the music gooove and feel good. Much easier said than done.

When I listen to myself playing, I often get shocked, haha!
Listening to myself playing with a band, I often hear that my timing is bad, I'm playing TOO MUCH etc.

For me, it is great to listen to myself playing. It makes me want to scale things down and not over-playing things. Less is more - I just wish I'd remember that when I play live....

Cheers!

I do record myself alot and analyze what I could do better.

This was one major reason that led me to develop applications (for PC and later smartphones) which do analyze my playing in real-time. Using my apps could save you alot of time ;-) Ofcourse, they don't completely remove the need to actually listen to your recordings.
Here is a short video clip of my most recent app: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88ivh3Sd3kg

I recorded a piece I've been learning for a good while today, Playing it, I thought it was as tight as a dogs behind, until I actually played back the recording. Bit of shock - it's actually quite scary. :P

Looks like a very interesting app.

How do I find out if my android phone is compatible? Btw, it's the relatively old Nexus S.

Listening to yourself is so helpful. I have recordings of myself going back nearly 30 years. There's also a lot of nostalgia when you go back and listen to what you were playing long ago.

If you can find the app in google play on the phone, then it is compatible. The Nexus S should be compatible.
