Default I'm bummed

So, my new Tama Artwood maple snare took a drop this past weekend and I finally got a chance to inspect the damage. I actually dropped it while I was uncasing it and it was about two feet from the concrete when it slipped out of my hand. The drum just bounced and I almost caught it on its way back up. It looks like it hit the batter rim, which now looks a little flattened between two of the rods. I think I can work around that one.

The bigger drag is now on my snare-side hoop, one of the rods was pushed closer to the rim (a bend in) and I can no longer get a drum key on it easily. I swear, I've been playing this long and only NOW do I actually drop a snare. And it's mine. And it's a new one. Dang it!

I guess I should be thankful nothing else was damaged. The shell didn't take a hit. I'll have to order new black chrome hoops for it as I don't think they could be bent back correctly. I'll try it once I put the new hoops on it, but I am bummed.

I think that's called the New Car Law....get a new car and the first thing you do is get a dent or a ding in it. Must work for snares too :(

That sucks bro. Try using a pair of needle nose pliers on that lug.

here's one instance where the oft-used DW phrase "if you don't post pictures it didn't happen..." would work in your favor.

So...don't take or post any photos and maybe it'll magically heal itself :)

I picked up my LM402 used off a guy. It had the stock heads on it so as I was reheading it a few days later, I noticed a flat spot on the reso hoop, and worse, the reso side of the shell. No doubt it was dropped somewhere along the line. I pondered how to get it back in round, which wouldn't be too hard given the right tools, but it isn't terribly out of round (1/4" maybe), and sounds great so I decided not to mess with it.

I guess I'll count my blessings that it wasn't worse. The drum still sounds find the way it is, and I managed to order replacement hoops today in the same black chrome that the drum came with. Fortunately, for a wood drum, the shell just wants to stay round, so no problems there.

You'd think I would've dropped the Copeland snare much sooner since it's so heavy, but I drop the lightest one....oh well.

Worse comes to worse, you could take that lug off then toggle it about so you can unscrew it from the hoop? Sorry man. That sucks but I guess shit happens. It'll be fine. You'll be rockin again in no time!

Yes, if you're going to drop a drum, the drum being light is a big advantage. Less mass to drive home that damage, additionally, ply is designed as a flexible construction material, so it's great at resisting impact. I think a couple of pressed hoops is a pretty small price to pay, & you got away with that lightly :)

Yeah, the very first tme that I ever bought a brand new car I had to park it outside and that night we got hit with one of the worst hail storms that I've ever seen. The thing looked like it had been worked over by a manic gremlin with a ball ping hammer and serious anger issues, (A short version of Charlie Sheen?). I moved out of Texas soon after that and never looked back. That was painful though.

Well Bo, at least the shell wasn't damaged. I think your guardian angel probably has a hernia after that one. Good luck with it.

Sorry to hear about the car. That is a major drag. I don't suppose Texas car insurance covers that kind of stuff since it probably happens frequently? That's way bigger than a snare drum getting damaged :/

You'd never want that to happen to any drum. However, a more painful hit would have been dropping the Copeland. The weight of that alone would mangle any lug and the rod.

I now keep your story close to heart my brother whenever I pack and unpack my Copeland.

You know, now that I think about it, I dropped the little 13 snare because I've been carrying it around in a soft bag. The Copeland travels in a H&B Enduro case and you literally have to take the lid off and lift the drum out with two hands. With the little snare in the bag, I was being slick and pulling out the drum with one hand, and using the other hand to lift the bag away. In the interim, the drum slipped out of my of hand because I wasn't thinking. Perhaps I should get a hard case to remind me to use two hands everytime....
