Default Here's One You May Never Have Seen

Joe Morello is the quintessence of swinging cool. Always musical and always on the money. There's no doubt where the time is with Joe behind the kit.

Check out the 4's he plays toward the end. So slick, yet so effortless and unpretentious. And then he does that little diddy at 9:20. LOL! Good one Joe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbUklDXdH2o

Nice video, thanks for that. I wonder what kind of cymbals he's using there?

I believe Joe used Paistes, but they were very different from the one's today. If I'm not mistaken, they were distributed by Ludwig back then.

The height of coolness. I was dissapointed to find out in my older years that Desmond and Morello hated each other; sort of blew my youthful fantasy of the jazz brotherhood. Still they made wonderful music together. Thanks for the vid.

that little move at 9:20 was just the coolest. So casual...I wonder, was it even rehearsed, or spur of the moment.

If it helps alleviate your disappointment, I've actually heard that although there was tension between the two men at first (due to Desmond feeling Morello was upstaging him when he joined the group), they later became very good friends.

I think he was using either Zildjian A's or Paiste 602s. He was closely associated with Paiste and they created his own 602 cymbal set called the "Joe Morello Set" at one time.

http://www.paiste-only.com/paistewik...e_Morello_Set:

Half way down the page on the Paiste-Only link above shows Morello's 602 set-up.

I don't know what brand he was using in that video though.

Yeah, that's a great clip. Joe was like a genre unto himself. He approached the music in such a distinctive way and his sound was unmistakable, but he never forced anything or overplayed.

Thanks for posting that. That is quite possibly the most enjoyable soloing I've ever watched.

Oh, how I wish to be able to pull off a single stroke roll that smooth, fast and effortlessly!
