How to take Wrap off? And Finishes?

Ex Nihilo

Hello, it's Adam. I am getting a cocktail kit, and I may be getting it painted. The girl which is painting it, has not painted a drum shell, so I need to do all finishes and prepare it. Only 35$ so i don't want to past her deal.

1.) How do I take the drum wrap off?
2.) Does it matter if she just uses normal paint brushes or what? She said she uses Acrylic
3.) After she paints it, what do I need to do to the drum?

All extra detail will help as well! Please help or give me links that can help.
PS: I attached a picture of the drums.
Should I do it, or keep the wrap on and put stickers on it

As far as taking off the wrap you need to get a heat gun and a knife. A hair dryer will work too but takes much longer. After you take off all the hardware find the seam where the finish is glued. The amount of glue used to hold the wrap down varies between companies. I did a Tama Rockstar a little while back and the entire wrap was glued to the shell. I've heard of companies only gluing at several points on the shell. Be very very patient. Don't rush your work or you will most likely damage the shell. Make sure that once you get the wrap off to sand the shell down. Hand sand it, don't use a sander. As for painting you should be able to paint it with a brush. I don't know much about paints. If you want something simple you can just use spray paint. You also do probably want to put a clear coat on it once the kit has been dried. I bought 2 cans of primer and 2 cans of paint for my kit (didn't paint a snare) and had more than enough. It's nothing fancy, just a nice plain satin purple.
Hope this helps.

This thread should help you out a bit.

Seems like your artwork design has a lot of black in it, so why not leave the wrap on the shell, and she just paints over it?
After that, make sure whatever "clear coat" you use is compatible with the acrylic paint your artist friend is using.

As for taking the wrap off, there seem to be two main methods of wrap application.

Total gluing, where the entire shell is covered in glue. That requires a lot of patience and sanding to remove the glue and the wrap without damaging the shell.

The other method is 'seam only' application, where the glue is only really applied to the seam of the wrap. Much easier to remove. Seeing as your cocktail drums are essentially reasonably low-end Peace drums, you'll probably find that the wrap is seam-glued.

If you're planning on having any plain wood on show, be really careful with how you apply the heat gun! Hairdryer is a safer bet, but it will take an age.
