I see Jojo Mayer and other drummers mount there tom on a cymbal stand instead of the bass drum, just curious why

It's all about positioning, What may work for you may not work for me.

As mentioned. It allows you to have more variety as to where you position your toms. Makes it a lot easier to place the drums exactly where you want them. Also, it keeps your bass drum 'virgin'. Which means there is no excess hardware in contact with the shell. This will enable the shell to resonate freely.

I started to do that because I wanted to put the tom to the left of my bass drum . but I noticed that my bass drum started to resonate more , and I sound more powerful.

after I saw the bob gatzen video , It became more clear . he said that the toms are putting pressure in the bass drum , and that dampens the sound , and also increase the tension in the shell , what raises the pitch of the drum .

try it , and see the difference
