Evans Coating

Has anybody else had problems with the life of the coating on Evans snare heads? I recently switched from Remo to Evans, because of the ease of tuning with the new collar design. I always used Remo coated Ambassadors for my snare heads, and never had a problem with the coating wearing off. I am now using Evans G1s for my snare, and I have to change my head every month or two (Which I typically do for my snare, anyhow) because of the coating wearing off. My most recent occurance was after I sat down with some brushes for an hour or so. Now, there are parts of the head that were barely touched prior to that, which are transparent..

Have I just gotten a couple of bum heads, or do they just wear faster?

Both of my main snares have Evans heads on them over a year old that do not have any wearing off. Neither is a G1, but it's the same coating.

I switched from Remo to Evans for exactly that reason. I find the remo coating very soft- I used the emperor x for a time but they looked terrible after an hour, and i foiund that it stuck to the tips of my sticks and ended up all over my cymbals. The G2's on my whole kit, inc my snare have been there for 4 months and there is no dicernable wear visible on any of them.

See, I'm having the same problem, but with the Evans coating. I've never had problems with Remo coating. I've been noticing it transferring onto my sticks and cymbals from the
Evans heads, but never from the Remo heads. I have a snare with a 6 month old Ambassador on it, and the head is still in great shape.
 
I've been telling people for years that there is no magic coating. I've personally had the coating wear on every major brand of head. It's a then layer that you hit and rub with various implements; it wears. Some individual heads wear more quickly than others, and the different company's coatings do seem to have different characteristics, but in the end, there is no magic.

Buy the heads you like the sound (or tuneability) of and enjoy them. Change them when you feel the need.

That's my best advice. As you've seen from the responses already, people have polar opposite experiences with brands, so don't worry about it.

I probably keep my heads longer than some of you, but I notice that the coating goes a bit smooth towards the center where i'm striking. It doesn't bother me, it's not flaking off or anything. I almost always use coated g2 on my toms.

I've been using my snare drum with the Evans coated PCRD since early November and the texture has got a little smooth in the middle, but the coating is still all there. This after hours upon hours of playing, and I don't exactly have a light touch. I'm having the same results with the Aquarian TCRD that is on my other snare drum. They're both great heads. At the same time, the coatings on my toms Emperor heads is wearing out in the middle. I don't know what Aquarian and Evans do to the coating that Remo doesn't do, but whatever they're doing is working. But, if you really love the sound of your Ambassadors and Remo heads, I can't blame you, but there is a price to pay if you can't stand to have a clear patch in the middle of your coated head after just a couple weeks or months.
 
I've had my Remo Coated Pinstripes on for over a year (I know) and every bit of coating is still on them.
 
I've never previously had issues with the coating on Evans stuff. But I did purchase a non L360 G1 coated this week and the coating has already gone smooth along with some very fast denting in the first 20 minutes of use. I've had maybe one or two dud heads in almost 20 years of using Evans...it happens, no biggie. I've just never had a head dent so quickly. I dont know how old the head was before I bought it, but I can't imagine it predates L360 by too much.

It seems everyone has issues getting good Mylar. Roy Burns alluded to this in an interview somewhere.

Any of the companies can have the occasional dud. Although Aquarian and Evans seem to be the most consistent. What matters to me is how they handle it. I had an Aquarian head swapped out a few years ago, no questions asked.
And EvansSpecialist seems to go above and beyond to take care of his customers. Kudos to both of them.

Agreed. This isn't meant as a trash on Remo, but the exact reason I switched to Evans was because of how easy it was to ask an actual person a question. Granted, this was at the dawn of widespread internet use, and I was hand writing letters to Remo because I could not find an email contact for my quality control issues, so my situation might not apply now. But whoever answered my email at Evans back then treated my problems with another brand of heads as if it were their own issue. Gave me some recommendations and a list of places I could purchase since none of the dealers where I lived carried them. Turned me into one of their customers.

long story short, yeah I agree.
 
Just bought a 5-pack of PCRDs for the year. I'll let you know if any start chipping prematurely. I have the same PCRD on my Sensitone brass snare that I put on last summer right before the Rocky Horror gig.. all the coating's still there.
 
Yeah, can't say I've had that issue with my Remo heads, though I had a coated G1 pre-Level 360 that chipped its coating incredibly easily. I also had an HD Dry that did not lose coating easily, though, so...

(+1 to Aquarian's crazy resilient coating. It wears smooth like most other heads, but the coloring is super long-lasting.)
