Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

What did you do when working with sabian? I'd love to hear about this, I want to work in a drum/cymbal shop. What credentials did you require?

I was West Coast Marketing Specialist(Retail displays in stores, etc) for a short time in 2001. Learn as much as you can about all aspects of drum equipment and keep up with it. That's it. Good interpersonal skills are a big plus too. Hope that helps.

is there a reason for the shorter set list?
It was due to Tommy's injury... The set list returned to its original length after a couple of shows with replacement drummer Will Hunt.

Thanks to all you guys for the ideas. I just got back from Tommy's and we have decided on most aspects of the kit. It is going to be awesome! Watch for it on his upcoming show towards the end of the season!

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

I have a question about hardware.....

I am thinking about upgrading my rack.... and I know that you customized a rack for Tommy with PDP and Gibraltar stuff....

My question is which of the 2 would you suggest buying a rack from, as the base rack.... Thanks for taking the time to respond...

Hey Shane, I am going to say Pacific... they make a terrific starter pack with a bunch of clamps included, plus their pipes are stainless steel and they stood up alot better for me than the Gibaltar stuff did. I'm sure you'll find more value in one of the pacific sets than any of the Kaman stuff. No disrespect to them by any means... it's just my opinion.

On a separate note: I'm teching for Dave Lombardo and Slayer next week for their taping on the Henry Rollins Show on the iFC channel... check your local listings... :)

Lastly, Tommy has decided on the finish for the Supernova kit and the upcoming fall Motley kit... they're going to be sweet! Thanks to all of you guys for the input. Late!
The pic below is (l-r) T, Derek Whibley(Sum 41), Viggy(T's previous tech & my mentor/brother), and me.

I'll talk to Garrison over at DW tomorrow... I'll see if we can set you up to buy direct from the factory. What's Lombardo's kit like; anyone have any sites they could point me too?

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

Hey, Steve!
Are you using only one mic to pick up the sound of T's snare on gigs, or two (batter and snare sides), or maybe sumthing else?
And what you can advice me as a PROtech, should I use 2 or 1 mic is enuff for my 14x8" maple snare drum? I really have no idea, what it's like to pick up the sound with 1 mic only from the snare side? will it work well or not? Simply my batter head is high-pitched and the snare side is low, and I want to get a low/middle short, kinda shotgunblast sound in total.

Cant wait yer reply, tanx in advance, Max.

Hey Max, thanks for writing. To answer your questions: on T's live snare with Motley I use two Shure SM57s- one on top, one on the bottom directly in the middle about 4 inches from the head/snare wires... I haven't ever tried miking just the bottom of a snare, you need to mic the top to get the attack of the drum... In the studio, I like using an SM57 on top and a SM81 condenser mic underneath.., it grabs all the body and snare buzz quite well; and you don't have to do much to the EQ either. Hope that helps! Let me know your results!

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

Thanx, Steve, it'll help a lot, cuz I have a gig tonite in our local St.Petersburg club, and they got a bunch of Shures SM57 (and/or SM58) there, so I'll ask about two of Shures on my snare! Kool, thank so much, once again!

Max.
