Favorite Song, Explain

Say your favorite song, it's artist, maybe add a link, and then explain why you like it.

John Frusciante- The Past Recedes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v9CfE90Sts

Strange enough, one of my favorite songs is acoustic. I like this song because just overall the video and song's lyrics show how pure and true to himself he is as a person. John has no credit cards or cars because he has no license. He lives to play and express himself. I find the song and harmonies very aesthetic on a canvas of an eardrum. Every note works and collaborates with another to stimulate the auditory senses. And I like the solo :]

A Looking In Veiw - Alice In Chains
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w98ht7j4i4Q

Such a brutal opening that I just love and goes into a message about the things we hide that also tear us up. Jerry Cantrell said the song was about A cell of our own making with an unlocked door that we choose to remain in. The video displays this very well and I can feel a conection with each of the stories that the song tells.

right now my favorite song is Cassandra Gemini - The Mars Volta

dunno if I can find a link (the total song is over 35 minutes).

I love it because it's very free-form. basically it's a giant improv caught on record and it keeps me interested all through out. I was reading an article earlier today on how they recorded this album (Frances The Mute). Here',s an section of the article from wikipedia...

"Rodriguez-Lopez wrote all the instrumental parts as well as arranging and producing the recording sessions himself. He used a method that Miles Davis used to invoke great performances from bandmates: refusing to let the other members hear each other's parts, or the context of their own part, thereby forcing them to play each part as if it were a self-sufficient song. In order to accomplish this, the musicians recorded to the pulse of a metronome."

Now imagine doing that to a 35 min improv song.... yikes.

God I love this band.

I love Mars Volta! Have you Heard Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez's collaboration album with John Frusciante? It's all instrumental and free form jam from like 04 and they released it for free!

Favorite song changes every day. Lately Descending Angel by Danzig has been creeping into my head alot.

My favorite drum warmup/jam-along tune has been the same for a while though: Words (between the lines of age) by Neil Young. Intro/lead riff has a great feel to it, verse is really solid, chorus has some cool tom fills, and you can fit a short drum solo over the guitar/piano solo before the second verse.

And obviously it's just a great song to begin with.

I've got a couple of favorite songs, depends on the mood of the day. My top 12 songs:

1)We Won't Get fooled Again, The Who:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHD0ZdhtmSQ&feature=related

Power, energy & anger. The ultimate rock song & rock band. And of course the best rock drumming on a song ever probably, Keith got me into drumming with this. Eight and a half minutes of musical epicness.

2) The Bug, Dire Straits:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MIX9eKYJXo

Fast tempo, continuous beat, as solid as a thundering freight train. If this song doesn't knock your socks off, I don't know what will.

3) I Don't Even Know Myself, The Who:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBDmpfnkFfQ

The Who have an impressive song resumé. "We Won't Get Fooled Again", "Baba O'Riley", "Behind Blue Eyes", the "Tommy" "Quadrophenia" albums.. The Who are by far my favorite band. This song radiates raw power and energy, I always feel pumped up after listening to this. Incredible band, definitely.

4) Parklife, Blur:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSuHrTfcikU

Happy, swingin' Britpop. Blur = joy. 'Nuff said.

5) Tripping Billies, Dave Matthews Band:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoObP4h22d8

Folk, Rock & Blues joined together in one kick-ass tune. Very original compositions, lyrics, and instruments for a band which has mainstream succes. They have got plenty of incedible songs, this is one of them. I'm certainly a huge DMB fan.

6) Paper Bag, Fiona Apple:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6h1NXqwTpo

Swinging jazzy tune, incredible self-reflecting lyrics packed in a catchy melody, sung by Fiona's impeccable voice. Pop/Jazz at it's best.

7) Telegraph Road, Dire Straits:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-_W2RBmbkI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P7-JpoTPEU&feature=fvw

This song tells a storyline with mood changes, and the musical compositions fit each changes perfectly. It has to be heard to be believed. The Dire Straits are incredible.

8) Charlie, Red Hot Chillie Peppers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbLKTjZLMec

Incredible groove, tune, fun combination of rap and singing, perfect chorus tune. Yeah, I dig this, makes me move my hips.

9) All Along The Watchtower, DMB's cover:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypaH1Gj6VIs

Another DMB song in my list. The incredible build-up to the finale is quite memorable and reaches perfection. I highly prefer this version above Hendrix's or Dylan's.

10) Hela Hola Tuthola (Dutch), Pater Moeskroen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSvKzejSsNA

Catchy folk music alsways works for me. Pater Moeskroen is a Dutch folk band with incredibly fun songs. The joy of their music radiates through not only their music, but also their lyrics (if you can understand Dutch that is). I highly recommend you guys check out their music.

11) Antelope Island, Herbie Hancock:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrgP1u5YWEg&feature=related

The musicality and perfection of this song is astonishing. It's solo's have feel and groove, also the drummer does an incredible job. Fusion jazz at it's best.

12) And now for something different: The Second Waltz of Johan Strauß, done by André Rieu:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP-jxd3DE9I&feature=fvst

Very joyful yet relaxed. Classical music at it's best, in my opinion.

Sometimes there's nothing wrong with melancholy, but I prefer happy and swinging music that makes me feel good. :) The genres don't really matter, from classical to jazz, to rock, dance, blues and even hiphop.

I have two that stands out.

My Way by Elvis Pressley/Frank Sinatra.

This song came out long before i was born but the first version i heard of this was by Elvis. I loved it then and still listen to it to this day.

For Once in My Life- The Temptations version.

This is a great song and another that came along before my time. I love to hear Paul Williams sing this song. He put so much heart and soul into this that you could just feel what he was saying. I was going through a bad time when i first heard it and i could really relate to the lyrics. Another that i still listen to to this day.

Nah I haven't heard it yet, but I actually was reading about it earlier today. It sounds intense! Free? I love free!

oh and Lex, you cheated mate. You were only supposed to choose one. ;)

Stricken by Disturbed.

I love the groove and the lyrics. I also enjoy the break down after the guitar solo.

Modest Mouse - Edit The Sad Parts

I wish I had a reason for this...Modest Mouse isn't even in my top 20 bands, and I'm not really into most of their music, but this one strikes a chord with me.

2 choices that are probably a wee bit cliched, but whatever.

Hey Jude- Got me into the Beatles.

Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin, blew me away when I first heard it. My first Zeppelin song, which introduced me to them and rock music.
I'll never forget the intro, or the Drum Entry, or the massive drum fill in the solo.

I'm a new member here so I hope you don't mind me adding my 2cents worth. A lot of it depends on my mood but the song I always comes back to is Magic Power by Triumph. The lyrics have always spoken to me.

"The world is full of compromise and infinite red tape, but the music has the power,
it's your once chance for escape..."

Moby Dick by Led Zepplin
Just freakin Epic

Also Six Degrees of Inner Turbulances by Dream Theater.
Not Portnoy's best work but incredible performances by Jordan Rudess, John Petrucci, and James LaBrie.

I'm gonna have to go with three...

1- U2) Where the streets have no name.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsMsmiwxGAk
I mean, come on. The arpeggio still gives me chills. And in this version, Bono in his Zoo days? Really, the entire band in their Zoo days.

2- U2) Original Of the Species
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu9rQ8lkQ5c&ob=av2n
Something about it.. maybe the orch. in the background? Pretty Cool...

3- U2) Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxzuqvXO4oc
I think its good. Espcailly the Bono/Edge version they've been doing since Elevation...

At this moment, It's probably Rush's Red Barchetta. That song is, IMO, simply perfect from beginning to end. Only one word can describe it, exciting. The lyrics grab you and pull you into the world of the narrator, and the music is simply exhilarating. It's almost exhausting to listen to.

You should read the short story that Neil read that the song is based on. Pretty cool.

The older I get the harder it is to say ... I've heard a lot and I forget a lot.

Maybe Steely Dan's Babylon Sisters - fantastic lyrics perfectly wedded to the music, top drawer musicianship, crystal clear sound, all with the Purdie Shuffle.

Or maybe A Day in the Life?I don't have to explain this one, do I, Buddha? :)Strawberry Fields - poignant lyrics, fantastic psychedeli sound, feel, mood and vibe complete with captivating sounds. And John singing ...

Tomorrow I may well think of something else ... it never knows ...

When I feel like jazz, then Trane's Alabama always hots the spot.
