Has anyone heard of this before?

The lyric is just awful, awful, awful. Wow. That's a bad moustache, too.

I have to say that I prefer Led Zep version, but to be fair, I knew Zeppelin's version first, although I agree with MFB, awful vocals, I didn't like the "duck" harmonica impro during Page's solo either, but I liked Jimy's shirt and jacket though :))

For me, it was so bad it was good ... once he sang "where it's at" but and followed with the line about a mouse I just KNEW he was going to refer to a cat ... too funny. If you're going to be crap, it's best to be amazingly horribly crap. Just ask The Shaggs, or Eddie the Eel or the Caribbean bobsled team :)

Ditto.

Very little of the Zep catalogue is original. Its a Jake Holmes tune. covered by Yardbirds first then Zep. Here's the original:

Ta Abe, nice find. Naive of me to think that Zep would have done something original in the early days. I guess if you rip off enough cool artists you can be successful enough to wear the lawsuits. Hmmm, interesting business model ...

Listening to the version Aydee posted, the lyric actually sounds a bit better. I think it's just the awful singing in the Yardbird's version that makes it a hundred times worse that it is. It's a dreadful lyric but bad singing can make it seem even worse.

Good point. Somehow the Yardbirds guy made everything sound banal. The oh-whoas were shockers. Band sounded great, though.

Agree with MAD about the harp playing too ... really, the only thing he got right was the little faux-Eastern tune at the start of the instrumental section.

It's interesting to see or discover that such iconics songs' from Led Zeppelin have been credited or thought of being written by Page/Plant, here's some interesting links:

Nobody's Fault But Mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZLyGk875EY&ob=av2n , Led Zep version is a cover :)

Is the intro of Stairway to Heaven by Jimmy Page? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd8AVbwB_6E, the similarities are uncanny and it was certainly released before Led Zep... thoughts?

No doubt both have been "borrowed". Makes you wonder about the other songs. For instance, what does the vocal in this this remind you of? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE4HGlmtOcg

Kashmir is original, isn't it?

Who is the drummer? What a difference not only because of the bad singing but the drums make a huge difference on this tune IMO. When you listen to alot of the originals that Zep covered it's amazing how much better they made them..They made them their songs, no other band could have done that. Good find

Cool. Glad that at least some of their stuff was original. I hope Jake Holmes gets a fortune from the lawsuit.

It's a shame he even has to go through legal channels - the decent thing to do when so obviously appropriating someone else's work would be to recognise your sources - both artistically and financially. Not impressed with sitting there, pretending it's all yours and hoping that no one points out that the emperor has no clothes ...

Many bands "hits" written in prior bands, then brought to the band that made it famous.

"Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane was actually originally done by the band Grace Slick was in before she joined the Airplane. I know there are some other examples out there too.

But as noted, much of early Zep was not original material.

This one's probably the most publicly know "battle" for taking someone song as their own, although sometimes it's not as obvious as it seems, however, George paid quite a sum of money for this song as a compensation fee...

The Chiffons - He's So Fine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2n_sACr6xA written by Ronald Mack

And the "borrowed" song, My Sweet Lord http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c3hK4reVOY by George Harrison...

No doubt, and that's cool. It's a shame to write a song and then have your cool riffs / harmonies disappear because the band broke up.

Playing a Yardbirds song is fine (depending on who contributed what) but the rearranging and rebadging of the Jake Holmes tune was blatant plagiarism. I hope Jake gets plenty.

And he should pay. It doesn't sound like a coincidence ... I believed George when he said he was unaware ... my guess is he heard it, forgot it, and then the tune popped up while he was writing.
