Anika Nilles

Re: this girl is killin it!

Absolutely love her style.

I like the way she switches subdivisions and she plays some gospel sounding stuff without being a wanker about it (going over the top).

Anika Nilles from Germany - here's her website and facebook page

On a German drum forum I learned that she studied at the Popakademie Mannheim (as well as at the Bundesakademie inTrossingen), with Claus Hessler as one of her teachers. Anika is using Mapex drums and Meinl cymbals.

Here's her latest video - "Alter Ego" - that tune was composed by herself. The video was shot at the Popakademie Mannheim.

(Just for info - Retrovertigo had created a thread on Anika's latest video but we didn't have a dedicated thread on her in the /Drummers/ section. So I went and created one but due to the chronology of posts, this post doesn't show up as the 1st post in this thread.)

Here's a pic of the video shoot.

Totally smitten by the drumming, she's the Benny Greb of the female drummers.

It cost me to subscribe to her YT channel.

Oh my, I think that might just be one of the best drum videos I've ever had the pleasure of watching. The only improvements I could think of would be the addition of a live band & a more natural/expressive/less processed sound. Her playing is just a delight. Everything I wish I could do, & delivered with incredible musical dexterity, both in her choices & her execution.

Blown away by that - utterly!

She plays a lot like Sebastian Lanser(when he plays funk and without double kicks).

Tasty as a Greb-fruit ;-)
(For those who don't know - Grebfruit is an album title...)
Seriously, I think she's on a straight path to a stunning career.

Re: "Alter Ego" - Anika Nilles

I just found this video, recently on Meinl's site... love the composition and had to share.

Alter Ego

Wonderfully played & gosh, those cymbals sure do sound good!

I've had an inordinate amount of trouble playing YouTube clips on my laptop lately. I've had to go all around the houses in order to see this, and oh my word it's been worth it. I always was a sucker for hi hats, and this lass makes me melt.

Just spotted her on Youtube, absolutely tremendous feel and some great chops to boot!

I like this video even more than her new one. I prefer both the playing, & the slightly less produced kit sound. I think heavy handed production detracts from her superb dynamic control.

I'm a fan - big time, & it has absolutely nothing to do with her gender. I think I've watched this video ten times already :)

What an amazing player. Plus, she went from Sabian Legacy & Fierce lines to Meinl Byzance? Killer cymbal taste too c:

Also, kind of random thought here, but those Sonor bass drum beaters have a wonderful shape to them. I don't know, they look like they were made to hit the bass drum. Weird.

...wow, they screwed up the editing at 3:27.

yes, Anika Nilles - we just touched bases and she will have a page on Drummerworld very soon - be prepared...
