You can record and edit samples in the unit, but it's simpler to create/rip/edit samples with a basic sound program, where you have more control, can move faster with a mouse, and name the sample faster as well. load to a USB thumb drive, and import.
In fact, there's software that comes with the Roland that lets you edit & configure. I think you can do all the setups/presets on the computer, and load as a whole into the unit.
Computers are always faster & more powerful than menu-driven hardware samplers. I've got the SPD-SX and I doubt I'll ever use it as a sampler.
