100 greatest drummers

I looked at it twice, and I don't see Nigel Olsson on there, man, I was listening to old Elton John songs last night, and I just love fills Nigel did on the slower songs in particular, like " someone saved my life tonight" am I wrong ? plus he played Premier drums. !

Criteria: - Drummers are ranked for their influence, innovation, originality, and technical ability. ( * = passed on )

any list that doesn't include Polly is an obvious sham.

she should be #22 on this list.

Totally agree, on that list #22 is taken by Steve Smith... ppffft, everyone knows too well that Polly's a much more all rounded and versatile drummer than he is, have a look at this clip for example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzveeuFz1_o were Steve is trying to play some John Bonham (#2 on the list) grooves, he even get a go at that Keep A Knockin' intro @ 3:00, the whole clip is below Polly's standard, that list is a complete sham :((

You KNOW something's wrong when Travis Barker makes it to the list!

i dig Nigel. he and Simon Kirke seemed to Zig when others would Zag. not better or worse, just different.

I disagree with the order a little, but I agree with most of the drummers in there(But Lars Ulrich? above Gavin Harrison bwahahaha) but I'm glad to see Pat Mastelloto make it in there, I didn't expect him to since he's in the most under-appreciated line up of King Crimson there is. But he definitely deserved it(My old username use to be Pat Mastelloto, interesting fact of the day), Danny Walker should have been in there too! But that's excusable since Intronauts a pretty small band.

Much better to call it "100 most popular drummers" cos that is what it is.

Best at any art form is impossible to quantify, Its subjective.

It would be possible to have a fastest drummer, or a loudest, or a longest solo, as they are measurable. But....meaningless, as who cares? Oh sorry, forgot about Youtube.

Question:Have you ever heard of Van Romaine?(I saw him live, I just realized he was on there) or Pat Mastelloto?
John Weathers from Gentle Giant made it above Travis Barker, and he's most definitely not more popular.

If you guys are mad that some of your favorite drummers from semi-obscure bands didn't make it you shouldn't be, they still have to be popular enough for people to at least be somewhat familiar with who they are/what kind of music they play.
As I said, two of my favorite drummers, Danny Walker from Intronaut, and that guy from Canvas Solaris didn't make it, but that's okay, because they've probably never heard of them......

What baffles me is there is no criteria used.

Some are clearly higher on the list for technical ability, while others are ranked for importance in rock-n-roll history, and while others are for a combination of the two.

I mean, they have Mick Feetwood at 76. From a technical point of view, he's not even in the top 1000. From his impact on music as band leader, he's top 10.

But like Polly said, It's just a great big list of great drummers to check out.
exactly, the order here has really no good meaning to it, but........
"Thank god Sticks has been gagged. Peart at number 1......man, I couldn't stand to hear the grandstanding.......he'd be skiting til our ears bleed."

YES, at least they got one drummer right, BECAUSE NEIL PEART IS THE BEST DRUMMER EVER, AHAHA, I TOLD YOU GUYS HE'S THE BEST, MUHAHAHAHAHAHA

Talk about taking the p1ss - LOL!

Apart from Nigel O, some other top players not included:

Prairie Prince from The Tubes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RCxy1LLL6c

Chris Cutler from Henry Cow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwoJ3-_wZOI

Cindy Blackman from Lenny Kravitz Band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJzkFsUcMdY

Roger Wilcox from Todd Rundgren's Utopia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCnpKgY6u4E

Pierre van der Linden from Focus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q

Kevin Godley from 10CC and Godley and Creme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn0dgCeAONs

Joe Vitale from Joe Walsh Band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0_KBe8z0h0

Rob Hirst from Midnight Oil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO7n2m8O_og

Lists like these are pointless. Popularity doesn't mean the drummer is that great. Lars Ulrich is in the highest selling Metal band of all time and he is a total noob on the drums, yet his popularity is high amongst the ignorant.

CD, bear in mind that most people don't know much about music, and they form the bulk of of most audiences ... so their opinion does matter in all but the most uncompromising musical situations (which, admittedly, can be pretty cool).

Whatever, that site uses influence as one of its criteria and Lars has influenced millions. Actually, I don't think he's a total noob at all - not as good a player as many in that list, but he certainly can play, especially early on where I think he does some damn good drumming. No bias here cos I don't care for his music.

I also disagree that the lists are pointless - it's good to have lists like that so you can fill gaps ... checking out good players we've not heard of.

Aside from those small points, I agree with you :)

I'd say the definitive list is right on the front page of Drummerworld.

And they still miss out on Prairie Prince. Listen to the guy

Overture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRhV2v5QbeI

Madam I'm Adam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ortsd4wIOTI

White Punks on Dope http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP8nGNbk7oQ

Mondo Bondage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTiaVT_BViY

He must have run over someone's cat or something because he seems to miss a lot of Best Of lists.

Oh yeah, this is good stuff. I saw The Tubes once at CalExpo (Ca State Fair) when I was really young. They are most known for their popular songs, she's a beauty and talk to ya later. I didn't know the drummer's name is Prairie Prince. He's pretty damn good. I'm enjoying these songs.

Speaking of bands from the Bay Area, here's a good drummer by the name of Mike Bordin. He co-founded Faith No More. The band has a cool history with Metallica. Bordin played in a band with Cliff Burton before Burton was in Metallica and now Trujillo, Metallica's current bassist is the olde bassist from Faith No More.

He's actually a lefty playing on a right handed kit.

Is there really THE greatest or THE best drummer out there? There are SO many great drummers from different backgrounds. I used to think that rock and heavy metal was where all the great ones reside, but I was totally wrong. To me, it's like music itself, whoever moves you, then they are the best!

Thank god Sticks has been gagged. Peart at number 1......man, I couldn't stand to hear the grandstanding.......he'd be skiting til our ears bleed.

Oh geez. First place? Really? Out of all the amazing drummers out there, this dolt takes first place? He's a good drummer, but I really don't need to see the rest of the list if he's ranked number one. I'll really only look at a list if Travis Barker is placed first and all is right with the world.

I don't know what's worse, Canadians, or Australians. Yes, Aussies are criminals, but some of the things Canadians are into should be against the law(Like the singing in Rush). I should make a list so it will be official which geographical areas are most easy to poke fun at.

Haha. Let' get things really riled up here and see if we can somehow, some way get Sticks in on this conversation. Just kidding. He's out there somewhere I'm sure...

This should be called a List of 100 Great Drummers. Peart #1 no way. But nice to see Carl Palmer #4. Now THAT's a great one. Could be my favorite of all time. Nice also to see Phil Ehart at #53 and still remembered. He plays live 100 shows a year with Kansas stil. Have been with 20 ft of him a few times over the last few years. Awesome.

How is Hal Blaine any better than Jim Keltner? And Aronoff a session player is an insult. John Mellencamp would not be where he is without Kenny.

Kenny Aronoff is a top 5 guy, IMO. Also, just my .02, but Keith Moon is one of the worst drummers I have ever heard...
