Fighting the drummer stereotype a tad here...
you know.. the boom- crash-bang-I'm the drummer- thank you-very -much syndrome...

which verse or lyric in a song holds the deepest of meanings / feelings for you?

Which 4 lines have left a tattoo on your heart?

* please dont list out entire songs here. Just those few lines that really hit home.

From the Beatles;

One day you'll look to see I've gone.
For tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun.
Some day you'll know I was the one.
But tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun.

John Lennon's Working Class Hero. The first four lines hold true to me.

As soon as your born they make you feel small
by giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and despise a fool
Till you're so ------- crazy you can't follow their rules
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years
then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religon, sex and T.V.
and you think you're so clever and classless and free
but you're still -------- peasents as far as I can see
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be

There's room at the top I'm telling you still
but first you must learn how to smile as you kill
if you want to be like the folks on the hill
Working Class Hero is something to be

Yes , A Working Class Hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

But I'd trade all my tomorrows,
for one single yesterday,
To be holdin Bobbys body
next to mine

I substitute the word Bobby with someone who means something to me of course.
Trading ALL my tomorrows....thats a bold statement.

"They come from the cities and they come from the smaller towns...with beat-up cars and guitars and drummers going CRACK-BOOM-BAM !

Old and decided
Youth overrided
I just need something
I don't want to fear every dying year

Youth Overrided - Cave In

a very difficult thread this one, there's so many choices. i dont particularlly associate this song with anyone in my life but this chorus in this song just transports me to somewhere and allways has since first hearing it 6 years ago. very weird.

Aydee this is a great thread, but what is your pick?

Wild Thing,
You make my heart sing,
You make everything groovy,
Wild Thing........

The Troggs

i know you dont' want the entrie song but this entrie song has meant so much to me after some of my class mates lost their lives in traffic accidents and having saved a few friends lives.

THE FRAY LYRICS

"How To Save A Life"

Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And would I have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And I pray to God he hears you
And I pray to God he hears you

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And would I have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
You will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And would I have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life
How to save a life

Romance is mush
Stifling those who strive
I'll live a lush life in some small dive
And there I'll be
While I rot with the rest
Of those whose lives are lonely too.

Learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
drink scotch whiskey all night long
and die behind the wheel . . .

Donald Fagen knew his Billy Strayhorn :)

Ken, that Dan lyric reminded me of Babylon Sisters:

We'll jog with show folk on the sand
Drink kirschwasser from a shell
San Francisco show and tell.

Well, I should know by now
That it's just a spasm,
Like a Sunday in TJ
That it's cheap but it's not free
That I'm not what I used to be
And that love's not a game for three.

Nice to see Dan fans. Brecker/Fagen's coded & witty writing kinda gets me as a whole, as does Joni's and Dylan's.... hated Dylan's music with a passion though. I'm still thinking about my 4 lines, still, NIKKK.

With Johnny Hartman on vocal's accompained by the Coltrane Quartet - that is just aboslutely phenominal.

Another love has come and gone and the years keep rushin' on
I remember what you told me before you went out on your own
"Sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone."
So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find that it wasn't really wasted time.

Waste Time, The Eagles

Here's another goody . . .

He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound
The sound . . .

Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterlings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity he says Amen! and Hallelujah!

There's a fair collection of gems on this thread :)

Yeah, I always felt that I *should* like Bawb, but Hurricane is the only one that I enjoy musically. That makes him a great songwriter to cover, whereas covering the Dan or Joni is not for the faint-hearted.

Another lyric that really got me was the Indigo Girls's Closer to Fine:

And I went to see the doctor of philosophy
With a poster of Rasputin and a beard down to his knee
He never did marry or see a B-grade movie
He graded my performance, he said he could see through me
I spent four years prostrate to the higher mind
Got my paper and I was free.

"And you thought it was only in movies
As you wish all your dreams would come true
It ain't the first time believe me, baby
I'm standin here feeling blue
Yeah I'm blue"

...and maybe this one:

"Twirling round with this familiar parabol.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing."

If you listen to Bob's phrasing you can hear it in Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Tommy Petty among many others others. Although people often do not like his voice, his phrasing is probably the most distinctive of any popular singer one could name.

I actually met Donald Fagen at the popcorn counter several years back at a Dylan show. Not really met, just said hello and he nodded and hid his head hoping to get back to his seat before someone else recognized him. I guess ran into is more the term.

I've got one more:

Lady evil, evil
She's a magical, mystical woman
Lady evil, evil in my mind
She's queen of the night
All right!

Black Sabbath.....Lady Evil.....an spell on your heart?

Municipal Waste's "Beer Pressure"

I stare at these drinks here before me
And everything else just seems lame
It feels like they're calling out to me
And I just can't hold my restraint

Feel the pressure!
There's just one cure

Pour us a round pass that **** down
Drinking these beers till we're nice and unwound

Drunk with my friends
It never ends
Looks like beer pressure has got us again

Race till it's gone
Finish the glass
We're getting drunk and we're doing it fast

We like to fall all over ourselves
We like to drink and we do it quite well

We have tried
We failed
Beer pressure's taking over
Death to being sober!

I stare at these drinks here before me
And everything else just seems lame
Feel the pressure!
There's just one cure

Beer Pressure!
You got it now
Beer pressure!
Now drink it down (yow!)
