3-ply Progressive Jazz set with calf top and bottom on all drums.
After the photos were taken, the original 3-ply 4" snare was sold. A 6-ply 5.5" now completes the set.

I've been trying to get a more accurate date than "the 1980s". Silver labels inside the drums, and serial #s range from 136XXX to 140XXX. I've heard they reset serial numbers end of 1983 back to 5 digits -- if true, then these are 1982/1983. Even Steve Maxwell couldn't give me a year.
Ron, Royal that kit is supreme. Just takes me back many years. and the cymbals look great as well. I'm not sure what they are but they make me want to strip the ink off of mine. Well done.
No need to be "Green with envy".
These drums are special to me because they are identical to a set that was stolen from me in 1963 in Rome. Which is not to say they aren't superb performers, but my circa 1979 Sonor 12/14/18 Phonics are on a par quality-wise.

Here are some other pictures of my Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit. I changed the hardware and cymbals since the last picture. The snare is a Mapex 14x5.5 Saturn. The cymbals are all Sabian:
20" AAX Dry Ride
18" AA El Sabor (cleaned today by the local drum shop)
16" AA Sound Control Crash (bought today)
14" XS20 Medium Hats
I cut a towel in half, folded it, and taped it down on the inside of the shell to help the miced sound.
Wow! some nice kits Archie, Drumolator and of course Ron = I always love to see your drums. I've seen them elsewhere and I never can get enough of them. I too am a huge fan of the 50's Gretsch kits....early 60's too.
My late 50's Gretsch kit is all three ply EXCEPT the 14 floor tom. I would love to find a 14" 3ply FT - been looking but man...are they scarce! I think if I eventually do find one it may cost me more than what I paid for my complete kit including cymbals.
A very detailed catalog of your drums, cymbals and hardware Drumolator - nice.
My brand new Gretsch Renown Maple in Silver Oyster Pearl.
I've saved up to get this one, and its a dream. Unboxing it was as pleasurable as losing your virginity to Megan Fox. Also made complete with a mapex black panther machete snare

Sometimes it takes a while to save up for something you really want, but in the long run it's very well worth it. It looks similar in finish to Ludwig's "sky blue pearl".
Enjoy it and now I gotta go and look up that Megan Fox chick, lol.
