Connie Kay

Recently I've been catching up on old jazz I've missed and I bought the Modern Jazz Quartet's Fontessa album. I was surprised to see that no thread had been made about the band's drummer, Connie Kay.

I suppose he's not a "drummy drummer" but his clean, sensitive playing and the way his cymbals intertwine with the piano and vibes enhance the band's beautiful rippling sound.

Yeah, Connie Kay is an important drummer. He played with Pres back in the early 50s on some of his best work, imo.

What you may not know about Connie is he played on Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison. Crazy!

check out the Cannonball Adderley record Know What I Mean?

Connie killin it on that record

I’ve listened a bunch to MJQ but to be honest, a little too clean for my taste. All magnificent players though.

His stuff with Pres is what I like most.
