My New Custom (Home Made) Drum Kit - What Do You Think?

The virgin kick, contrasting hoops, that killer green stain, Fiberskyn 3 head, total class.

Hahaha. I'll make you your very own if the price is right. Until then hands off!

I may take you up on that offer at some point. Just got rid of the DW and I'm looking for my next kit. If I find nothing that suits my needs, I'm going straight to you.

very nice job looks professionally done. how do they sound?

thats a crazy tom placement, hows that working for you?

Wow, what a beautiful set. You did a great job with the assembly and finishing of the drums and the arrangement is very unusual. All the drums are low and to the side, showing off that big powerful bass drum. I like how the cymbals are arranged, leaving a big gap in the front. The only drawback is that your rack and floor toms are far apart but you can adjust to that. Every drum set is a series of compromises and some just look more common than others. Your set looks very uncommon and striking.

Best drum porn of the week.

They sound fantastic, and they're getting better and better (because I pretty much just play and tune non stop for three hours a day. They're very warm and resonant. The bass drum has a great punch to it, but still has a nice deep full sound. I really enjoy them.

As for the tom placement, I find that I get a more consistent strenth to my hits with them falt like that. It's very comfy for me.

DUDE, sweet to say the least...amazing look, albeit as others have said unusual for the toms, but if it works for you and is comfy...KILLER. Love the look and it is truly unique. I have been doing a lot of looking as well to making drums myself and therefore this is just a big thrill for me to see. NICE JOB!

Staining and finishing was really easy. Drilling the holes made me a little scared because it had to be exact or the hoops wouldn't fit on right.
Same thing happened to me with my snare build (still got to post pics). I had to double and triple check my measurements, was so scared I had done some sort of miscalculation.

Anyway, great looking build, loven the look and the finish.

I definitely suggest building your own to anyone who has basic skill in wookworking at all. And I mean BASIC skill. It's not difficult at all and it's a great feeling to build yourself. It also offers sonic and aesthetic options that you simply can't get on the market today.

Thanks for the compliments!

You're welcome...and thank you...I will definately do this as well in the near future

Very nice. Good to see you took my advice, too!

hey i was just wondering what type of wood did you choose to use?

I chose Maple shells for this project for a few reasons, some I'm proud to admit, others not so much.

1) I've read that maple shells gave alot warmer tone than some drums, and since I was trying to replace cheapo drums that sounded like hitting a plastic bin, I wanted the warmth.

2) The maple has a very unique but simple wood grain which I liked the look of.

3) Keller Maple shells were very easy to locate and a good deal for the price. More exotic woods would have been much more expensive and probably less ready to go, and I wasn't into the idea of cutting my own bearing edges and doing all the hand sanding. Plus the fact that I already had $2000 to invest so I couldn't afford an extra grand for exotic shells.

Maple is great, but my snare is going to be bubinga. Mmmmm.

yeah, no goaste or "you have aids" comments here.

Anyway, nice set.

How long did it take, like, how many weeks/months?

Beautiful.

Were the bearing edges already cut on the shells, or did you have someone cut them, or did you cut them yourself? I'm under the impression that is the hardest part.

Also, it looks like you have half the tension rods/claws removed on the bass drum reso side. What's the reason for that?

The people I ordered from allowed me to tell them what bearing edges to cut so it was pre done. For me it would have been the hardest part, I am not very compotent with power tools. I was confident with drilling, but I would be scared of sanding because a mis-calculation could lead to a mutilated, and untuneable drum. Assuming you had a wood shop available, or you were experienced, a table sander or router would do the job, but that's above my head.

The reso head deal is that I ordered the wrong length of tension rods originally, so I re-ordered and in the iterim I used from my old kit. 4 of the old ones didn't fit for some reason (cheap kit, poor quality), low and behold I decided that the reso could do without for the time being. It still sonded good luckily, the fibreskyn is very thick, so 4 could tune it decently.

Thanks for the comps!
