Yes. When I play just above the head, I'm very fast, articulate and dynamic.
In fact when I play above the head, I'm the greatest drummer that ever lived.

Along these lines I was always taught to allow my sticks to play away from the drum, which focuses on getting a good rebound. Always made sense to me.
