My very very first drumset was a Japanese luan stencil kit (the badge said "Westwood") but also came with a blue duco Ludwig Pioneer. The drum had been dropped on the strainer and cracked the shell; the previous owner had rotated the strainer and snare butt to the next space between lugs, ignoring the snare bed. He also drilled the holes for the strainer crooked. I repaired the crack and moved the parts back to where they should have been. Great, great drum.
The next Christmas, my folks bought me a five-piece Blackhawk set from the Sears catalog. The previous Blackhawk kits were made by Gretsch; these were Taiwanese knockoffs with the Pearl-style tom mounts. All the drums had six lugs, even the bass drum. I mashed that together with my Westwood kit, some roto-toms, and an old Ludwig floor tom that had been painted black, and bam, I had a big double-bass kit to fool around with.
I kept all the pieces of this Frankenstein monstrosity for close to ten years. I traded the whole thing in plus some cash to get my Yamaha Stage Customs. The Ludwig snare drum (which my stepdad bought with the Westwood kit for $225) sold for $200 by itself. I still have the Ludwig floor tom (rehabbed and rewrapped with my Standards).
