My very first drum kit was a Roland TD-4 electronic kit :p My parents wouldn't let me buy acoustic drums because they didn't want all the noise. Not a bad piece of equipment, actually. I mean I wouldn't gig with it, but it's fun being able to switch your kit around at will

My first and only kit! Rockwood! Drums are lame, but sweet cymbals (though there's a china to the right that's cut off) and upgraded hardware. I must admit, i'm proud of my cheap, kiddie kit. Saving up for sonor 3007...

My first kit was a Peavey INTL 2. My dad got it for Christmas and two years later he got a Roland Kit and gave the kit to me, and I basically upgraded most of it (some of it still original).

Then, a few months after my dad gave me his Peavey INTL I went out and bought MY FIRST PROPER KIT. A 6 piece Mapex Meridian Maple (now 8). So I gave him his kit back, and he bought new pies and better hardware.

I bought new pies too. Was fed up of Paiste 101's. Went out again, bought Zildjians and ta-da. I have a 'pro' kit :)

I call it pro, it's an awesome kit :D

My first kit was a gift from my parents in the 80s. It was a 5 pc. Maxwin (made or owned by Pearl). It was off-white with a steel snare. It had concert toms and a resoless kick. I don't have a pic, but here is a stock pic of the same kit of a different color.

Actually this is a picture of me with my second kit (Tama Swingstar/Imperialstar) taken in 1985...my first kit was a 3 piece CB-700...no pics of that one though..

Here's my Gretsch Catalina Maple. Not pictured is the 12" rack tom. I still use this set since I only got in November 2010.

I wish I had pictures but, my first kit circa 1977 was a used Apollo 5 peice. It was dark blue sparkle and the tom mounts were stripped so the toms moved all over the place. the flat based stands would tip on occasion but they were drums. My father bought them from my cousin for a couple of hundred and it came with hats, a Zildian ride and some thick bent up trash can of a crash cymbal. The best part my neighbor a few apartments away (yes apartments.lol) who was alot older played and bought a new kit as he was in a bar band. He saw me outside and literally said, hey kid, you play drums too want my old set, they are in the storage room, just take them. Well i took them and guess what it was another metallic blue Apollo set, so I made a big double bass set and all for about $200.00 I ended up giving them to a neighbor in 1984 for free.

Just found an old pic of me in 1991 with my first kit, a Pearl World Series. I'm on the right sporting the mullet and the porn star glasses. WOW!

Arise, zombie thread!

This was my CB700 kit. Tragic, isn't it? The sloppy setup, the mismatched heads, the tom angles, and how about that Halen logo on the kick batter! It was originally on the reso side. I think I broke through the batter, then taped it up and swapped the heads. I do remember I started getting my friends to autograph it, so I wish I still had it for a nostalgia piece. I also remember mounting that splash cymbal on the base from a sheet music stand and wrapping masking tape around the top to keep in on there.

1967 gold sparkel 4 piece Kent, 1973 7 piece red Ludwig Vistalites which i lost in a house fire in 2012, now playing a late 80's. 7 piece Premier set.

1998 Pearl Exports in a black wrap. Bought them used from a friend with a full set of hardware for $300. Still use pretty much all the hardware. Pearl hi hat stand, and 1 straight stand are still going strong for me today. I had no idea what kind of wood they were, had no idea about bearing edges and head selection. All I knew was I was a Pearl, Zildjian, and Aquarian guy.

A '60's Ludwig Club Date in red sparkle that my aunt got at the pawn shop for my 11th birthday. It came with one cymbal - a ginormous 24" ride cymbal, haven't a clue what brand.

My very very first drumset was a Japanese luan stencil kit (the badge said "Westwood") but also came with a blue duco Ludwig Pioneer. The drum had been dropped on the strainer and cracked the shell; the previous owner had rotated the strainer and snare butt to the next space between lugs, ignoring the snare bed. He also drilled the holes for the strainer crooked. I repaired the crack and moved the parts back to where they should have been. Great, great drum.

The next Christmas, my folks bought me a five-piece Blackhawk set from the Sears catalog. The previous Blackhawk kits were made by Gretsch; these were Taiwanese knockoffs with the Pearl-style tom mounts. All the drums had six lugs, even the bass drum. I mashed that together with my Westwood kit, some roto-toms, and an old Ludwig floor tom that had been painted black, and bam, I had a big double-bass kit to fool around with.

I kept all the pieces of this Frankenstein monstrosity for close to ten years. I traded the whole thing in plus some cash to get my Yamaha Stage Customs. The Ludwig snare drum (which my stepdad bought with the Westwood kit for $225) sold for $200 by itself. I still have the Ludwig floor tom (rehabbed and rewrapped with my Standards).

After 6 months of initial private lessons on a practice pad drum set, I selected from my teacher's list (he was a Premier user and got a discount) the 3 piece Premier "101" shown below in Black, courtesy of my generous parents. He said it was time to move onto a real drum set- but the single practice pad was used for all ongoing lessons.
Same bass drum beater head as shown- loved that combo of lambswool and plastic. I already had a budget Ludwig steel snare ( I think it was an Acrolite) so I just got the 20/12/14 combo, along with a Zildjian 18" ride and 16" crash he hand-picked for me.
I recall he advocated an open sound for all drums- no muffling at all except the bass drum had that one felt strip on the batter. I was confused for years about why so many drummers I saw on TV had that felt strip running along their resonant head when I didn't have one.
Too bad the parents sold these drums after I had moved out and not used them for many years...

This is mine (not my exact one)

Still have her and use her to this day. Out of all my kits now own I don't think in my lifetime I could sell her mostly for the memories.

Gigged this weekend with her funny enough. Stays in storage at the bands studio and sounds pretty decent for gigging kit. Maybe use her once or twice a year. The steel snare is my main gigging gigging snare, which often gets very complimentary comments from fellow drummers (most thinking it's a 402 Supra) it's a great and versatile drum despite its low price tag. My top end studio snares don't need to be used as a result of this drum

One good reason example, A few months ago we pulled out a tube station for me to see a familiar snare bag rolling across the platform. Then the realisation hit me, it was mine. Luckily enough some kind soul found it and handed into lost and stolen. I was distraught waiting for a tube in the opposite direction, to not find it on the platform- until our reunion about half an hour later after locating the tube station offices !! Never been close to a panic attack before that night....

Pearl Export in Alpine Green. She holds a special place in my heart

Sizes 10, 12, 14 and 20

This was fine for 3 years, but my knowledge and tastes evolved. i was glad to sell it. But it had a rocking Paiste 404 ride and older Sabian HH 17 crash that were the highlights of this setup.
