I've been playing tons of different sticks during my band's rehearsals, from the Vic Firth 7A to the Zildjian Dave Grohl signature stick. I tend to break sticks very easily when practicing with my band, so I need some very durable sticks that are still on the lighter side of the catalogue - approx a 5A size.

I've been looking into the Vic Firth Extreme 5A's - do any of you have any experience with those? Maybe I should try oak sticks or such?

Advice greatly appreciated!

"Durable" and "light" often don't go in the same sentence when referring to drumsticks. You mentioned oak, which most people agree is more durable. However, it is heavier, and tends to be a bit stiffer and denser than hickory, which leads to a different hand feel.

I recommend maple. A maple stick of comparable diameter will be lighter, yet heavier maple sticks, such as the Vic Firth SD1, are large diameter, perfect for rock. There's a reason some varieties are referred to as "rock maple"... lol.
