I think you need to invest in a music stand.

Here's my 4-piece It's a Yamaha DP 22x18, 12x9, 16x16, and 1964 Supraphonic 14x5. It'll soon change to a 5-piece MCA (24x18, 13x9, 16x16, 18x16 in vintage natural finish) but anyways, heres what I'm playing right now:

I am left handed and play open handed.

Me too. My hats are one inch above my snare, and the ride is about two inches above the hats. Peace and goodwill.

I just got a new Mapex Horizon kit. I know its not as good as the Maple or Birch Meridiens, but I needed an affordable kit to teach since I conduct drum lessons and the prospect of school kids banging away on an expensive kit didn't seem very exciting :)

I got the jazz kit and I run a 4 piece setup with a 10" rack tom, 14" floor tom and a 20" bass drum. I got one used Zildjian 16"crash from one of my friends who doesnt use it anymore and a set of new ZHT 14" hats and 20" medium ride. I use a Tama HP200 bass drum pedal and Vic Firth 7A sticks. I still have the stock Remo heads on, but will change to EC2s soon.

Currently I have the kit completely muted since I teach in my apartment and there is no way that unmuted kit would last more than a day without the neighbors wanting to take my head off :) and I find it much easier to practice too since I can now play at anytime I want.

Sorry for the crappy photo quality but my phone is the only camera I currently have on hand.

I've always wondered - what's the purpose of those little dots on the bass batter head?

Mostly to protect the batter head from the beater. Depending on the make of the pads or dots, they may also change the sound of your bass drum.

Here is my USA Customs in Savanah Sunset (5.5x14, 8x12, 14x14 and 14x20) with a couple of 20" Spizzichino ride cymbals (2483 g with rivets and a 2042 g) and a vintage set of Zildjian 15" hihats.

Very nice looking Gretsch kit, in fact I was looking at the same kit in the same sizes just the other day. They look and sound beautiful. Have fun with them.

what did you use as a mute between the hihats? not on top but inbetween

It's not a bad photo as phone photos go.
That is one of my favorite Gretsch finishes. I'd love to see one in real life some day. It not only looks like a gorgeous finish (I've seen them on the Gretsch site) the name is beautiful...Savanah Sunset.....awesome name for a finish. Exact same sizes as my 58Gretsch kit by the way.

Congratulations on a fine choice.....it does not get any better than Gretsch Custom USA IMHO.

I don't use anything in between the hi-hats since the level of muting provided by the pad on top is enough for me to be able to play without disturbing the neighbors.

My Gretsch New Classics. I've been playing with the set up and think I've found something I like finally! I also noticed my kick mic is pointed funny...must have tripped on the cord while taking pictures....Oh well.

...this kit is now complete.

My 14x6.5" classic snare arrived a week or so ago. DW has come up with another style of throw off and but plate. The but allows for three quick tension settings, making this even more versatile.

Yamaha Maple Custom (it's actually a five piece but I rarely used the 12")

10",14",22", 13" Musashi Oak.

Great kit (For sale in the classifieds, just an fyi)

I also have a 1968 Yamaha Golden Dragon colored kit that I'll NEVER part with.
