G1 coated as a bass drum head ???

Hi !

Anyone try that ? If I'm not sure but I think
it's like an EQ4 without the muffling ring ??

Right now, on my 18" bass drum, I have the
stock drum head "Remo UT china" witch is
something like a Powerstroke 3 front & rear...
but I don't like them so much because the are
too muffled, not enough sustain... all my kit sound
smouth "jazz" except my bass drum sound very rock,
focussed...

What do you think, should a simple G1 coated do the trick ??

I want a warm tone, a bit of sustain and I will tune med high...
I don't want a lot of attack, for soft playing, I think attack sound
like plastic...

Thanks for your help !

I got a pair of coated ambassadors for my 18" kick (basically the same thing as coated G1...) for batter and resonant. I have to use a plastic or wood beater to get any articulation out of it. It's nice for a warm boomy sound, and if you want the sound of a small concert bass drum (not much articulation), then a felt beater works nicely. So far, I like the sound of wood, but it could just be the shape of the beater head and how much of it touches the head compared to my plastic beaters.

They sound pretty good, but in the future I'm going to experiment with a clear batter for a little more articulation with a felt beater...

I preferred a coated Emperor for that application. A little more fullness. The Coated Ambassador worked well too though so a coated G1 should be fine

Thanks guys for reply...
will give the G1 a try...

Or maybe fiber skin, but
I don't know about the sound
of those heads... The look is
killer for sure ; )

Fiberskyns are great heads, like all Remos IF you can get a good one. They are truly unique on the market though. They have a round attack and a warm tone. They have plenty of sustain but not the plastic kind. Fiberskyns on both sides would be great if you want that warm open feel and sound and not a plastic clicky modern sound. It's a great thing just not in all styles of music. Listen to some Jeff Hamilton on Drummerworld, he's got Fiberskyn heads on an 18" bass. He uses Diplomat I believe though.

Hey TB !

My 18" Sonor maple with the G1 coated sound like a marching
band cannon. It's not boom, it's taaaaaowwwwwwhhhhhh, a bit
papery.

With a 22", in my opinion, you will need a bit a muffling.
I often put a small towell between the bass drum G1
and the pedal.

I have try a lot of things for my 18" and the G1 is my
best option for now... But I just order a set of Fiberskyn...
I hope that they will sound good... will put them everywhere,
bass, tom, snare, reso and batter side (not on snare side)...

Anyway, G1 coated both side with a bit of muffling should
sound warm and boomy... ...not a lot of attack...

that sounds like i might like it. im running an eq3 reso for the port but i might use a felt strip to control it a bit. id just like to make my 22 sound a little bit more like a 20 or 18. im just not in love with the punchy, muted, click sound in modern drumming.

by the way, this is kinda the sound im liking.

With the right amount of muffling, it should sound similar to Stanton's sound...
It should sound not very far from that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIxxB4c_T-k&feature=related
but a bit lower pitch...

Philippe

awesome. i will be ordering one tomorrow.
i need to get some kind of patch. the eq2 i had wore through pretty quick.

is the evans clear plastic patch any good?
will it alter the sound? hold up for the long run?

The plastic patch are good but change the sound a bit...
(more attack) I use those patch on all my bass drum head...

With a boomier sound, I think it ad a bit of definition...

The best setup I had for that type of sound was a birch,
20" Sonor bass drum with EQ4 frosted up front and the
famous G1 coated as the batter... nothing in the bd except
a towell between the batter head and the pedal... no hole

...tell us how you like the sound when you will get it...
