New Kick Drum Heads

The more important question is: are you playing out miked or unmiked? Or are you not playing out at all, i.e., is this an exercise just for the practice room?

If the latter, you can use anything you want, muffle the crap out of it or buy a dead-sounding head to begin with.

If you're playing out unmiked you want unmuffled single-ply heads (or heads with a modest control ring such as PS3s or EQ4s), no port, nothing in the drum, and tune for boooom. Nothing like "thud" from behind the kit, but people will be able to hear your bass drum.

Miked has a lot of possibilities. I tend to prefer heads where you can adjust or remove the muffling to taste rather than having (possibly excessive) muffling built-in and unremovable.
