One Hit Wonders

[QUOTE=DogBreath;

(Sorry, I thought we were just having fun with this thread, didn't know we needed to quote Billboard statistics)

Oh yeah, sorry, I'm just a TOP 40 nut. Not meaning to be too picky....

OK, here's a favorite sixties instrumental, also creditied with being the first "British Invasion Rock record" :"Telstar" by The Tornados

Also liked "Sex & Drugs & Rock and Roll" - Ian Dury and The Blockheads. These cats were fantastic musicians, I have two albums. They are still out there without Mr. Dury who has passed on.

Early sixties: "The Big Hurt" By Miss Toni Fisher, was the first popular record to use "phase" in 1960. Another phased record popped up as "Itchygoo Park" by The Small Faces
Phasing in those days was first done by playing pack to exact copies of the recording just miliseconds appart which produced this effect. Later great recording engineers began to phase only certain tracks within a master.

Some More Favorites:
"Good Old Rock and Roll" Cat Mother & The All Night Newsboys. Really a medley of fifties R&R songs.

"They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha Haaa" Napolian IV

"Jungle Fever" AKA "The Orgasim Song" by La Cuckarogis (Mispelled I'm sure)

OH, I could go on forever!

Onemat, here's a nice bit of trivia for you. The band 'Tornado' who you've cited as the writers of 'Telstar' had a lead guitarist with the surname Bellamy. He is in fact the father of Matt Bellamy the lead singer and lead guitarist of the British band Muse, who are actually very popular over here in the UK, even if they haven't had the same success over in the states.

Moonlight Feels Right - Starbuck (one of my personal favorites - maybe the only pop hit to ever feature a marimba solo)

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves

Venus - The Shocking Blue

Incense and Peppermint - Strawberry Alarm Clock

Little Red Riding Hood - Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs

Judy in Disguise (with Glasses) - ???

Boy From New York City - Manhattan Transfer (I think that was the only song of their's to achieve 'hit' status???)

Classical Gas - Mason Williams

Timothy - The Bouys - really spooky lyrics....
now that was a freaky song - so why did I like it???? I guess 12 year old boys are probably the target audience for any song about cannibalism.

This thread really reveals our ages - it seems like it's easier to remember songs from when you were a kid :-o (and it's hard to do only from memory...)

Hey Y'all...

Would Eric Carmens' "All By Myself" (1975), be considered a OHW?

He had a few other, not so successful, hits with the Raspberries and in his solo career, but "All By Myself" was such a big hit for him that "most" of us never heard of him until he recorded and released this in 1975.

I'll never forget this song 'cause it was a "coming of age" tune for me. I was 12 or 13 at the time...

Peace! ;-)

Thanks Doc!

How' bout Sammy Johns' smash hit in ' 75...

"Chevy Van"

SJ was a prolific song-writer in those days, especially for other artists', but "Chevy Van" was HIS only song he did himself that ever got close to being # 1.

I guess you could say he was a OHW, huh? ;-)

Oh, and...

How 'bout "Jackie Blue", by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, in 1975.

and...

"Moonlight Feels Right", by Starbuck, in 1976.

;-)

Martin Briley - Salt in my tears
When in Rome- The Promise
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Haircut 100 - Love plus one
Young MC - Bust a move
Frida - (I know there's) Something going on
Patrick Swayze - She's like the wind
Tommy Roe - Dizzy
Planet P - Why me
The Members - Working Girl
Porno for pyros - Pets
Heaven 17 - Let go
and the classic......Don Johnson - Heartbeat

Oh...

"The Night Chicago Died", by Paper Lace (1974)

I really remember this song 'cause it was ALWAYS on the radio when it came out. And it was right around the time of my Beatles worshiping, and my Bay City Rollers infatuation.

Oops! I'm TOO honest sometimes, huh? :-|

Oh, and btw...this was also around the time when my interest for the drums sparked, right after I caught Buddy Rich on the Tonight Show for the first time! Man...my jaw STILL hurts from that!

Ahhh...the good ole' days. :)

Though I'm really showin' my age! ;-)
