How could The Offspring do this?

I found out recently that The Offspring have basically stolen the guitar riff from a Hawk Nelson song. Here's the proof:

The Offspring (you can skip to 2:45 if you don't want to wait):

Oh and I looked up the dates of the two albums and The Offspring one came out two years later.
Well, there you go. What do you guys think of this?

Did the Offspring credit Hawk in the liner notes?

hmm..

that's interesting....

it could be just sheer coinsidence..but, it seems like more..

i could contact HN, cause i have a few connections..haha(not bragging..just saying), but i dont want to stir anything up that doesnt need to be..

It's honestly a very common occurence.

Check out Sum 41, Nickleback, even Pink etc... on Youtube for other examples.

Sometimes it's coincidence (especially within the realm of pop music) and someone writes a melody/hook that sounds identical to another song. Sometimes it could be the artist ripping off someone else.

It's hard to prove, and there's not really anything you can do about it. If you're really worried, contact Hawk Nelson, make them aware of it, and suggest legal action.

There's a similarity, but most of music is learning how to hide your sources. And anyway, this one I can see off as coincidence.

It happens all the time. Listen to Message in a Bottle by the Police and then listen to Don't Fear The Reaper by BOC. Or More Than A Feeling and Smells Like Teen Spirit

Riff also reminds me of the Kinks, "You Really Got Me".

If you really want to frustrate youself, read up on how much Led Zeppelin "borrowed" riffs.

They are not really the same, they are just a little similar. Its pretty much the same notes, just a different rhythem. I don't think they copied them though, it is probably a coincidence.

Oh please, when you say it like that, it seems as though you're saying the majority of Zeppelin songs have stolen riffs

They were. Jimmy Page will tell you that himself. A lot of what he did was reworked stuff from Samuel Johnson, and some of the old Memphis blues players.

Well, it seems my sarcasm is getting worse and worse....

dude there are only 12 notes in the western system of music. it's not entirely suprising that there would be some overlap...

hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you listen the, Go Get a Job by the offspring, its the same melody as OB La Be Ob la Da by the beatles, things happen i dont think people steal stuff outright its just not professional.

There is nothing new under the sun, boys.

Ripping off other people's music is a long standing tradition in the music world. Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss... they all did it. It's a relatively recent thing for people to claim ownership of their music.

If you really want your head to explode, check this out:

We the Kings song: "Check Yes Juliet (Run Baby Run)"
Released February 4, 2008 on iTunes

Taylor Swift song: "Love Story"
Released September, 2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4xmxb9K8RI

Both in the same key. Very similar chord structure. Swift's chorus melody is nearly identical to the WtK verse. Both make heavy use of the "Romeo and Juliet" theme. Rip off? Hard to say, but it's VERY close.

End result? I cranked up my DAW and made a mashup. Kind of fun to hear Taylor Swift singing a punk rock song. :)
