EH's Monster fun kit 9pc, plus what it looks like now with new ride cymbal.

Hi guys you might know from a previous thread that my mate has bought himself a sexy set of chrome over vistalite ludwig drums. Well i bought his old drums off him for 50p (he's such a generous bloke, he even gave me his copy of CoD4!) and decided i'd put them in the same fabric that my drums are wrapped in so they match okay together. They're really shite drums (sorry jack) but the kick had an EMAD head on it which i slapped on me TAMA kick and it sounds amazing now! As i said, nice guy.

Honestly, I just did this for giggles really i'm not gonna keep it like this. I'm gonna probably get rid of the 13" tom off the above the kick because it's not very well positioned being so tall. Plus it's practically the same pitch as the 14". I like having 2 rack toms though so i reckon that i'll get a 10" on there instead at some point and it should be easier to position. I was also thinking of turning the left kick (which is literally just for show atm because i forgot the beater which my mate also gave me XD) into a gong drum! Maybe put the 16" floor tom (the camo one) as a secondary kick because as i say these drums are pretty low pitched.

Specs:

(2) 22x16" kick drums
12x11, 13x11 toms, 14x14, 16x16 floor toms, 16x15 left side floor tom
14x5 wood snare
14x6.5 secondary snare

ZHT 14" fast crash/14" orion solo pro hihat combo
ZBT 16" crash
PAISTE 502 12" splash (that's cracked)
Z custom 18" medium crash
ZBT 20" ride
ZHT titanium china

It looks great. Big kit.

My only problem is the snare stand, which looks like crap IMO and why have you got a trashed crash bell duct taped to your snare?

Otherwise it looks like a very clean job.

Well okay the reason for that is to basically make it sound more "electronic". It's quite commonly done on "jungle" type kits in fact meinl actually make mini cymbals for this reason so yeah.

Personally I wouldn't have wasted any time or any money on it. Alright if thats what you want i guess.

hey mr himself, sucks about the rot on the bass drum :/ probably a good thing i got a new kit then! brilliant job with the fabric wrap, looks really well done.... ever thought about taking up a proffesion in sewing?

as for the electronic snare, for anyone looking for a less DIY approach, can try hammerax dustbowls or something like that.

p.s. rock on Siralan Sugar

The set looks and says "fun." The wrap application looks very well executed.

However, I would get rid of all the duct tape and broken gear unless you are trying to sell it on Craiglist.

Thanks mate since i didn't use any glue for wrapping it, the wraps are slightly creased around the edges after the lugs which i used to stretch the fabric up vertically but apart from that i'm pretty happy with the results. Obviously i need a new snare drum stand before i can get rid of the tape but then yeah i will.

Hey Jack glad to see you've started posting mate :) I'm gonna get Preston to register on bass forum when the exams are finished too lol. I've seen and played on your new drums and that but seeing it on your sig it does look rather impressive i must say!

haha i cant walk past the kit without grinning :p

Nice Kit... I like the snare stand and the bell taped on the snare... Very "McGyver" of you sir... I always like McGyver stuff; especially on drums...

Thank you very much mate ;) It's something i like to call "Engineering". That is, finding solutions to mechanical problems using nothing but what you have to hand.

Well i've bought a new ride cymbal:

I actually tried it out today because it was my local drum shop selling it (who happen to be the cheapest in the UK for TRX cymbals if anyone is thinking of getting any) so i'm gonna go in with the money on monday and get it then i'll post pics like. It was £134 anyway. Good deal?

In case you don't know by the way my kit isn't usually this mad. Here's a more recent pic:

As you can see, it's just 1 up 2 down now.

very ambitious and the finished camo wrap looks awsome, nothing beats a little elbow grease man, nice work!

Sorry about the tape on the tom head, it was a bit too lively when i was doing a recording of it so you could constantly hear it resonating. I'm looking to buy a 2 ply head to help sort that out and also because it's all dented anyway.

The cymbal looks great. A few marks here and there but i think it's a good few years old by now so really it's held up really well. Paiste really do make such consistent sounding cymbals because this sounds almost exactly like the one on the website. I think for £130 it wasn't too bad really. Plus the drum shop sold me a gibraltar 5609 stand for £40, which means i can mount all my cymbals and stuff. I wouldn't mind being able to mount it off another stand really rather than having it mounted off the kick. So i guess i could get a multiclamp or something like that. Also as you can see i cut out the cracks on the splash. I must say for a cheap splash it really has that proper nice "radiating" sound that most people associate with B20 Bronze cymbals. If you're on a budget, i would reccomend getting paiste cymbals over other brands as they know how to make a decent b8 bronze cymbal.
