Jojo Mayer

Jojo is one of my top inspirations, and on my top 3 favourite drummers!

"don't pray to ashes, pass on the fire"

possibly the best quote i have ever heard, and by the great jojo

Man, this guy has been a true inspiration to me. And he's fixed a lot of things for me which I previously thought I had a really great understanding of.

I've got a little gear query. So at about 1:10 in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWRU3Sxt9tY

You get a close-up of something he's using which looks remarkably like a Yamaha Jingle Wedge. But it's got a serrated edge letting him do that sort of guiro slide thing. I can't for the life of me find a product out there which could be the thing he's using.

Any insight? Did he modify a jingle wedge? It looks like a pretty clean job if he did...

its a yamaha groove wedge, gives a louder more natural click.

Yes, he did it himself, with a drill and some endurance he said.

What WAS buddy rich to jazz? Personally I don't believe in breaking it down like that. All the styles are relative. Jojo is a great drummer, whether he's playing jazz or a polka in 9. Buddy Rich was a ground breaking drummer in the area of technique, but if you want to talk about drummers that changed music, Tony Williams and Elvin Jones are conceptually light years ahead.

What the hell happened to Jojo's appearance? He looks like a thug from Miami Vice or Starsky and Hutch. Anyway, awesome playing as always!

Jojo Mayer, Bill Brudford and Danny Carey are my biggest inspirations. Insane hand technique and such feel...!
I was born the same day as Jojo. I hope it means something...lol (not to mention that I use His sticks too but not because of the signature;)). Now I know I should be born 3-4 times to gain His level!
In my opinion he'a a living legend:)
