Getting rid of rust on hardware...

Alright guys! :)

Just recieved my Pearl Piccolo 13x3" snare in the post. Brought it from ebay, used, at a killer price. Unfortunatly though, the lugs, tension bolts, and the rims, do have rust on them. I read a while ago that soaking them in Diet Coke over night does get rid of some of the rust, and then using WD-40 the next day, along with some elbow grease. Any ideas if this would work? Any alternatives?

STEEL WOOL 0000. (0000, and no other grade). The best.

Way better than any polish: no residual to worry about, no scratches, it doe really no arm to the chrome.
Just make sure you wear a mask as you're cleaning your hardware with it.
