I used to play like this (right now I'm running a 4-pc) and I'm going to get another, larger kit in the future. I set it up this way because I like having my ride right in front of me over the bass drum instead of to my right side. However, I find the gap between the rack and floor toms to be a bit troublesome when trying to play certain licks. How do you overcome this?

Well, I find that gap much less uncomfortable than the awkward path my hands have to take to do a tom roll when the rack toms are mounted over the kick. With offset toms, my arms and upper body move naturally down the toms, but with toms on the kick drum I have to move my arms much further away from me to reach the second tom, and then in again for the floor tom(s).

Not completely left of the bass, the right-most tom just left of center, a little in-between.

Taken when I was recording recently. Been using this sort of setup for a few years, by far the most comfortable way I've found to mount 2 rack toms.

same way i have my kit set up, ill get a pick tommorow, what stand do you use for those toms? mine is annoying as although it holds the toms fine, it doesnt sit straight and annoys me

I'm new here, and very glad to share.

The kit consists of:

DW Collectors, candy apple red lacquer. 22, 10, 12, 14. Born 10/12/2002

Ludwig Phosphor Bronze snare.

Vintage Avedis Zildjian 22" and 19" rides, 14" hats. (So vintage that that's their full model name "Avedis Zildjian." Circa 1960s.) Early '90s 16" Sabian AAX crash.

I love this set-up. Much easier and more comfortable rack tom access. My hat's off to whomever discovered this.

Pics are quite old, around 2005...but I played an offset kick for a while (inspired by Scott Philips from Alter Bridge). Judging by the other photos, I'd say my toms are "more left" than average.

Normally I do this 3-up, 1-down but I think I'm sort of liking this setup...

Sonor Force 3007s

Toms, diameter x depth:
8x7
10x8
12x9
14x14

Bass Drum:
20x17.5

Snare is a Tama Melody Master, Mike Portnoy's signature snare, inner ply of steel and 8 plies of maple... 14x5.5 I believe.

Cymbals:
14" New Beats
18" Xs20 Crash/Ride (I love this, even if it is cheap)
21" AAX Raw Bell Dry Ride (a really heavy one, this bell will deafen you with how loud and bright it is)
24" Giant Beat, possibly the most gorgeous cymbal ever made
16" Wuhan China

And not on my setup at the moment because I ran out of hardware is a 17" A Custom Projection Crash, which ironically is a bit thinner and possibly darker than the Xs20 and chokes much easier if I hit it hard so it's on the sidelines until I have more hardware for now...
