Tony Hajjar

Hi guys

I'm new to the forum so I'll take this opportunity as well to say hello to you other drum heads out there.

The reason why I'm posting this is because I searched the internet for the drummer Tony Hajjar and didn't find any real discussion about him. He used to be in the band At the drive-in and later on he was in the band Sparta.

I personally like this guy very very much. I envy his style and skills and I am having a really hard time trying to duplicate some of the songs from At the drive-in. It seems like you really have to a high stamina or very developed technique to do what he does.
Now I am not a very skilled drummer myself (been playing for only 3 years) so I might be wrong when I say that he has a unique style and creativity that is rare, but I really like what his drumming does to many of the songs that he is involved in...

Does anyone have any opinion on this guy? Would love to hear it...

Hi Mahi. Welcome to the forum.
I am sorry but I've not heard of this drummer. Hopefully another member can help.

I am not a fan of Sparta's vocalist, but the rest of the band is pretty good. Tony's drum part on "Hiss the Villain" is my favorite example of his playing.

At the Drive-In is one of my favorite bands of all time, and Tony's sound was a big part of that. If you're looking to elevate to that, I would get a copy of 'Superunknown' by Soundgarden, and lift as many of Matt Cameron's chops as you can. You'll be able to apply those across the board if you're playing loud rock-and-roll. Also, check out ...and You Will Know Us by the Trail Of Dead, especially their record Source Tags and Codes. They keep the drums simple, but they could dig out a trench with the sound they get. Enjoy!

Love Tony's playing, especially with Sparta (who I feel is way underrated).

Highlights for me..
- "Mye" - great verse, great fills in the chorus.
- "Cut Your Ribbon" has a great intro.
- "P.O.M.E." - overdub city but still rad.
- "Guns of Memorial Park" - again a great intro.

Really though, Tony's just the right fit for Sparta - solid, driving, hits the BIG punches in their songs, stepping up when appropriate and dropping back when the guitars are going nuts.

Cool.. Tanks for the tips.. I will definitly look into it :D

I always thought the drum sound on In/Casino/Out was great, Tony's awesome...Joe Easley of Dismemberment Plan and Damon Aktinson of Braid/Hey Mercedes come to mind too when people bring up late 90's Indie bands. It's a shame all those bands were so short lived.

He's a pretty solid high energy drummer. At the Drive In's album from around 2000, Relationship of Command I think, was groundbreaking.
