Anybody else here who knows of this totally amazing jazz drummer/percussionist? He originates from Italy, but has lived in Norway since 1979. He has played with the likes of Richard Bona, Bobby McFerrin, Palle Mikkelborg, Mike Mainieri and several ECM-musicians. In Norway (at least, if not the whole of Scandinavia or Europe) he's considered a legend. I thought I should share the more decent videos I could find on youtube so you all can enjoy his playing =)

Here with norwegian bassplayer Arild Andersen and hungarian guitarist Ferenc Snetberger

Again with Ferenc Snetberger, but now with Richard Bona on bass

With Arild Andersen and scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith along with some footage from the town they played in and themselves before the gig x-)

And lastly footage of some more groovy playing with (all norwegians) Audun Erlien (bass), Bugge Wesseltoft (organ) and Knut Reiersrud (guitar+lead vocals). These people are all considered to be well established in the "A-league" of musicians in Norway, so to speak =)

I have a heard a lot of records he has done but I have never seen him live though. He is an outstanding drummer with an uniqe sound and feel. I heard he got cancer a couple of years ago. I dont know the state of his health these days.

Luckily I have been able to see him live in action a few times. And as you said,
he has a truly unique character in his playing. Very recognisable.

He did get diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, but apparently he has been
recovering OK. But sadly, nothing is for sure. Some say it's impossible to know
how long he has left. But this is just what I have heard :s

I grew up listening to this guy. He was like the Norwegian Jeff Porcaro for a while. Played on everything both mainstream stuff and more adventures stuff, but always put a solid mark on everything he played on. Met him many times through friends. One of my absolute favourite musicians.

His main passion in life though is fishing. He has more fishing gear than drum equipment. lol

never heard of him until my drum-teacher mentioned him. Pretty good player

Very glad to hear Paolo! Looking forward to hearing and seeing you on stage in the future :)

Hey Paolo.

I remember a long dinner with and my friend Corrado in Ålesund. I was a young guitar player then, but have since picked up the drums.

I also met you a couple of times through one of my oldest friends Petter who is just as much into fishing as you. He's pretty much given up the drums, though.

Glad to hear you're back in shape.

Paolo passed away July 5th. after fighting cancer for many years.

First time I heard Paolo was on Bendik Hofseth's IX. They recently had a reunion tour and played all the songs from that album. That was the last time I saw him play.

No! :(
Just recently discovered him via Arild Andersen´s excellent live album "In-House Science". Fabulous player, very imaginative.
