Excellent pictures and links of Brian Downey, He remains in the Wishlist of drummers.

Thanks,

Been a fan of Brian since Jailbreak when I got my first Lizzy album. I was fortunate enough to see him on the Johnny The Fox tour when the opened for Queen in Ottawa. Double headliner in my eyes. His snare work is flawless (Sweet Marie in particular shows this off for me). Boogie Woogie Dance... absolute madness on drums. For fills, it's gotta be Chinatown for me. I could, as any Brian fan could, go on and on... I used to use Emerald and Masacre as endurance exercises. I'll stop now... well almost... like all of us here, what will it take to get this man on this site?!?!?!

I Love Brian's playing on Live and dangerous - best live album IMO. I was lucky enough to see Thin Lizzy in "82 on their Renegage Tour - San Sebastion Spain. Amazing live band!!!!!!!! What a night.

I read somewhere that brian downey's drums and the crowd are the only thing that was kept from the live recordings for live and dangerous, and the rest was done in the studio. That is great testament to his ability to nail it every time.

Thin Lizzy is one of my favorite bands! Downey's playing fits them perfectly. Songs like Bad Reputation, Emerald, The Warriors, Boys are Back in Town, etc., place him high on the list of great rock drummers.

I was really happy to see his playing get some praise in that recent issue of Modern Drummer. I wish they could have gone into some detail about his gear, but oh well. Maybe next time.

...and it lives forever in our hearts, as time goes by!

I am enjoying at home all this great music and amazing musicians, while on sick leave...True! I feel nostalgic and well-inspired at the same time. Cheers!

Decidely Ian, you feel nostalgic tonight, however, great band, great drummer, Phil Lynott and Gary Moore are deeply missed... but the spirit's live on.

Wow! A thread from 2005 that just won't die. Good thing too.

I found this Thin Lizzy concert from 1981. Excellent!

Brian's got a nice solo at around 1 hr and 9 min, but the song starts around 1:05. Or, if you've got 1:50 to kill, listen/watch the whole concert!

Looks like Brian tweaks a couple of toms with his key just before the song starts, though I can't tell for sure.

Can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon at work.

I'm kicking myself for not getting it when I saw it, but BestBuy (a electronics retail chain here in the US) had the Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous DVD in stock (a filming of their 1976-77 tours)! I love that band, Brian Downey rocks! Maybe I'll go back and see if they still have it....

I'll make my first post on this site a bump to this thread in recognition of Brian Downey.

A fine drummer indeed. The term "underrated" tends to get used when Brian Downey is discussed, and I guess it's true. Check out "Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed" from the "Johnny The Fox" album.

Oh, and hello from Sydney.

Cheers,

Ramondo.

Very happy to see Brian's profile added to the site. One of my all time favorites. He introduced me to shuffles ( although way back then I didn't even know what they were called )
