And my fave - tearing it up with Weather Report: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quhbvB_5JyM

It's not really Weather Report, as Wayne Shorter is missing. This concert was called Narada Michael Walden & "Former Members of Weather Report", as far as I know, and I think it was produced for the Japanese TV only.

Michael Walden is a fine drummer & producer. He did many records under his own name, and there's a few fun and catchy Disco-Funk tunes. I saw him live with Mahavishnu Orchestra many years ago (this concert was released on DVD).

Love "Visions Of the Emerald Beyond" - he plays with such drive - I prefer this to any of the other more conceived sounding Mahavishnu albums

Very surprising that there aren't more posts about MW.

In my book he is easily one of the top drummers of the past couple of decades.

He was playing in the bay area at the Keystone in Berkeley one night with a fusion group called Warriors.

His performance was nothing short of spectacular.
The best I have ever seen (and I have seen some goodies ,T Williams ,Garibaldi ,Steve Smith ,Steve Gadd).
Two hours straight of non stop genius.

At 62, this topic can make me sentimental. I have many memories of bands, songs, drummers and riffs which remind me of a much different place in my life, but this album is in the top five for sure..

In any event catch the drums 44-45 seconds in to this one...

Ain't that the truth.

Walden has such an interesting style. It gives the impression he is playing much faster than he really is, and he does play fast, no doubt.

There is something very technical and primal going on all at once in his playing.

Black Market is one of my favorite albums, hands down.

Narada Michael Walden has to be one of the most gifted drummers that I have ever heard.

My favourite tracks with him on are:-

Breathless - Robert Fripp

Sophie - Jeff Beck

I never get tired of hearing these awesome tunes - so inspiring.

I haven't heard much of his drumming. Seen some clips of him playing live with Jeff Beck and I recall he was really good.

Anyone know him from his own quality funk music? Again, I only know "I shoulda loved ya", but it's a massive choon. The man has a great voice and the bassline on that song is definitely up there with my favourites in that genre and indeed overall.
