New Tama tools!

Just wanted to post some pictures here of the new kit with a few words. The pictures have also been taken with a proper camera and proper lighting.

The last thread about what I was going to get went a bit long, and now that the new tools are actually ready for a gig, I figured a new thread was in order. Yes, my next plan is to post some videos of it so you can hear how I tune drums, and they do actually sound quite good. But here they are first...

Some may question the "proper lighting" bit - well, if you take your flashes, and point them at a white ceiling, then you get all this nice soft white light coming down to light everything up. Granted, I'm a photographer and own my own lighting, but you can get this with smaller flashes, your subjects just have to be smaller.

These are Tama Starclassic Bubinga Elite drums made in Japan in 2009. It was a custom order because they don't have that gold stripe that goes around the drums. It's just basic gun metal gray. The drum hardware is brushed nickle. It looks a little darker than the regular chrome, but not much. Classy. Sizes are 6.5x10, 7x12 and 15x16 toms, and a 18x20 bass drum.

In the behind the kit shot, you can see that deep rich red African Rosewood show up in the bass drum.

The snare drum is a classic Tama Mastercraft steel 6.5x14 snare drum that was built in 1982. I just got it today and spent most of the day dismantling it and cleaning it up. I put new heads on it and new snare wires and this drum absolutely rocks. This is my first time having a snare with die cast hoops so I'm still adjusting to it. Hell, I've never played a 6.5" deep drum ever! It does sound drier and not quite as ringy, but it is ringy enough. Dang thing weighs in at 13 pounds.

I've included a shot of me behind the kit so you can see how the lighting actually works. And when you see my name, you don't associate it with a young sexy female.

And yes, I only need two cymbals and some hats. No, I don't need to add drums to this set-up. In fact, I have one tom too many as it is! Another important piece that's missing from the shots is the cowbell. I tend to use mine alot, but it's not in the pictures.

Enjoy some Tama Bubinga porn!

Beautiful drums, Bo. I figure you have just the right amount of everything!

But I still think of those avatars when I think of you...

I hate to be the person to tell you, but you set up your kit backwards....

Seriously nice kit though, we should set up a Tama Bubinga group!

yeah, I'm with alparott, I still associate your user name with a sexy womans. sorry! (Not really sorry)

Beautiful kit there you have my friend. I'm sure they must sound as great as they look.

And I don't blame you for keeping the cymbals minimal when you have Zildjian K's. So much tone you can get from just one cymbal alone.

Well, if the women are good with it, then I'll continue that. Next photo shoot will be with one of them.

Oddly enough, I only have one K - the 20" Custom Dark Ride. The other two are an 18" A thin crash and a pair of New Beats. I do have another 17" A thin crash that lives in the bag at the moment.

But it's funny, I was just making fun of Keep It Simple - that guy has too many cymbals. I still don't know what the one with the holes in it is all about! He also has too many drums ;)

There should be a Bubinga club here. Or maybe a group called; "We laugh at those of you arguing between birch and maple!"

Now that's a beautiful and interesting kit: I like very much its appearance (the bass drum hoops' color and the kit color make a beautiful contrast) and it's not often that we see unusual drum sizes like these ones!

Yes, it would definitely be nice to hear how the kit sounds!

Lucky you!

Not sure which "one with the holes" Keep It Simple has, but I just picked up a cymbal with holes in it myself! Zildjian 16" A Custom EFX. The holes really cut down on the sustain. This cymbal has effectively replaced my 10" A Custom splash (though I'm sure it will make a comeback once I get another cymbal stand).

I love Tama and Bubinga's especially............awesome kit

P*ssed that over here in Aus Tama's are stupidly expensive..........even though I have a Pearl Masterworks.................I'd trade it in andy day for a Bubinga

Hey Bo, The kit looks great but you set it up backwards! The snare goes on your left side.
Is that real Bubinga? Or is that Mystery Bubinga?
For some reason, The word Bubinga. isn't in my spell check dictionary.
It suggested the word Bubbling instead.
I just learned that Bubinga is actually African Rosewood.
Cool, my old Gretsch kit is Rosewood on the outside. Its probably Mystery Rosewood because it is from the seventies.
You of course know that I am kidding around with you, Right?

Kidding noted, Bob!

The Mystery tag I use on my Sonors because they're maple, but nobody's sure what kind. I don't know if there is a mystery bubinga. Maybe they use that for the furniture....

Really nice kit ... mysteries and all!!!

Bo, before I congratulate you on your kit with too few drums & cymbals, I can't leave this "extracting the urine from KIS" to go on much further. I'm away from my computer & having to deal with some bad stuff right now, but when I'm back on the forum, I'm coming to getcha! I only have one more drum than you FFS! Plus, I both love & use all my cymbals, in fact, I'll have some serious cymbal news to announce quite soon.

Seriously, great kit Bo, & cool you have something you can feel will be a life long companion. My cymbal with bits missing will remain a mystery until I return.

Oh yeah? Bring it on, man! ;)

Actually, you have two more drums that I do. You use a double bass pedal, I don't. And I actually only play four drums at a time. That errant 12" tom is just there for looks and is included now because it came with the kit and balances out the 10" and 16" toms quite nicely.

My snare drum is alot fatter than yours too! So yeah, bring it! ;)

Small sized drums look awesome, especially in that deep red color. They sound must be good aswell, with a quick attack and a clear set of tones.

Thanks BassDriver. I'm working on a video right now, andas soon as I can get a clean signal to my camcorder, I'll post something on Y'Tube. I gotta do it before I beat the heads through from all the playing!

Love the Tama kits, nowadays, die cast hoops and shells that just ooze craft.

whats the jump like from the rack toms to the floor? its a big size difference.

I suppose traditionally, you'd normally have a 13" then go to the 16". I'm only dealing with one inch less. When I see a 'fusion' Tama kit set-up in a music store, the 10", 12", 16" seems to be a popular configuration for them. It also gives them the chance to sell another drum, like a 14" floor tom to the customer as well.

Come to think of it, I feel for this marketing ploy back in 1984 when I bought my first Tama Superstar kit (remember when Superstar was the top-of-the-line - it's like a forgotten era...). I bought two 10", a 12" and a 16" floor tom. The next year I went back and bought a 14" floor tom!

The tonal jump isn't as shocking as one might think. But because of the smaller bass drum and the shorter tom, the physical jump is almost nonexistent! Love it.

You have a 5 piece, I have a 6 piece.

Just because you don't use that "extra" tom, that doesn't make it a four piece.

You use a double bass pedal, I don't.
Nah, you still can't pretend that means I have two more drums than you.

My snare drum is alot fatter than yours too! So yeah, bring it! ;)
So what are you trying to say? Fatter is better? Does that apply to your piccolo style toms as it does to my piccolo snare drum? Can't have it both ways! Or are you saying my toms are better than yours?

And as for cymbals, I suppose you're going to tell me you only need one because your uber skills allow you to get any & every tone out of one pie. And, while I'm at it, I only have one kit, oh, and I don't post threads about how pointless high end kits are, then go buy one!

Just a pity I can't pull you apart about your playing. You're a fine player, dammit!!!! Please post some really crap playing so I can feel good about myself, oh, and a few pictures of an ugly past girlfriend or something. Lurv ya really! KIS 1, Bo 1, your turn!

Well I hope whatever you're dealing with turns out OK. I'm catching the next flight over and we'll do this old skool style with a drum-off in a back alley!

Take care, man! I'm coming for you!
