Vintage cars

Larry

"Uncle Larry"
I don't know anyone who doesn't drool over vintage cars.
Being from America there's just a whole vintage car culture and I was wondering if people in the UK, Oz, and other non US countries, covet the same kinds of cars. I know nothing about really cool Austrailian cars, English cars, heck I don't even know if there was any cool cars in Oz.
So what's your top 3 all time favorite rides? Anything goes here, new, old, wacky, whatever
Hard to choose, but I would go with:

1965 Mustang 3/4 fastback
1965 Chevrolet Impala SS ragtop
1968 GTO with hideaway headlights

But there's so many others I like equally as well...
66 - 70 Chevelles, Challengers, 34 Ford 2 doors, 1960 Corvettes, heck almost any Corvette, 66 - 73 Camaros....

Are these world famous cars or are they just a US thing?

now we're talkin something i know about ! way to go larry !
including what you've put down how about these in no perticular order -
68 - 72 olds 442
66 L-79 chevy II
68 -70 chevy nova ( yenko , big block , ss350 )
68-70 mustangs ( mach-1 , boss , cobra jet )
anything with shelby on it
68 - 71 camaro ( long list !)
66-72 dodge charger ( r/t , 383 , 440 . 440+6 , hemi , daytona )
69 - 71 dodge superbee also 70 superbird
cuda & challenger
tran-am / firebird
amc - amx , hurst scarambler , javilin
buick - gs , gsx
the list goes on and on ..
as far as the great people from oz , i believe Holden would be a big one
for england , sorry don't mean to offend any british members but vintage wise - a ------nothin !
the thing is though any of the new cars that have come out within say the last 10 years will flat out perform the vintage muscle . i purchased a 04 gto brand new ( i miss that car ) took it to the track , let out the rear tire air pressure and ran a 13.8 completely stock . i've restored many older muscle cars and other than the nostalgic feeling for them i would prefer new muscle .
i'll scan some picks of cars that i've done when i get them scanned , i've had some that most have never heard of like cosworth vega ! that is something that england did have , great racing engines ala cosworth !

I used to like cars, Then I repaired them for 35 years. Now I couldn't care less!
Everything that has been made in the past twenty years just looks like a Toaster or a TV to me. They all look the same!
I got bored with the 60s cars years ago.
I never liked the 50s cars.
I hated the 70s cars
Forget the 80s.

I like drums much better!
I can smash drums and cymbals and they don't break.
Well, almost never break!
At least I spend more time playing the drums than I do repairing them.
Cars aren't like that! They are always broken or they need something.
I'll stay with drums.

I tend not to like the look of vintage cars, I'm a modern design guy.

New Camaro's, Corvettes, Challengers, Mustangs, all awesome.

The only "old" car I can name off the top of my head I can aesthetically appreciate is the Dodge Charger SRT, which looks good in a bright Hulk Green with black flames just so you know.

That was priceless!
Sorry Bob me and gwaco will talk amongst ourselves as Malti says..

I would like a nice Gull wing Benz myself, or a 57 chevy or a 60 caddy with the monster fins.

The problem with a gullwing Merc is when it rains and you get in or out, the interior, and you, get wet. Cool looking but a real poor design. Just saw a commercial today for a new Merc Gullwing, new but still a bad design.

I used to have a 1973 'Cuda 360, but I sold it to my brother who, in addition to mine, has a 100% numbers matching 1970 'Cuda 340. Off the top of my head, my top five in order would have to be:

1970 AAR 'Cuda
1969 Camaro
1970 Challenger T/A
1970 Mustang BOSS 302
1970,71 Maverick Grabber (no really)

I also have a weak spot for '68 GTX's. ;)

I'm English but I have an unhealthy obsession with Vintage American muscle cars as do a couple of my friends. I think it stems from watching Gone in 60 seconds, Bullit and all those other films far too much. I'd literally give one of my testicles for the chance to own a Shelby GT500 ot 350. Big fan of 1969-1970 Dodge Chargers and Challengers, also love the Plymouth GTX around the 1970 models.

To be honest though anything that looks like a muscle car I'd love.

Where I live in England there is quite a big group of young guys that modify cars. Every saturday theres a massive gathering along the seafront to showoff their cars and whilst there are some quite nice japenese imports most of the cars are utter trash that people have made even worse by bolting a million amps worth of subwoofer to the rear.

Every so often a group of older guys with imported american muscle turn up to show them how its done and the look of sheer bewilderment, envy and inferiority on the others faces is absolutely priceless. Theres a couple of guys with replica General Lee's and you can hear the horns from my house which is about 4 miles from the seafront lol.

As for classic English cars that I'd like, the Ford Capri 3.0 RS is probably at the top of the list as its about as close to a muscle car we've ever got. Being an Essex boy I also love 'Cossies' or more commonly known as Cosworths. The Sierra and Escort Cosworths are very high up the list although only being 25 years or so old I'm not quite sure if they classify for Vintage yet!

Damn I love cars.....need more money!!!!!!!

My hands down favorite is the 1968 Firebird.

I had two of them.

The first one my Dad bought for my mom in 1968. Pontiac was selling them at the time for a $1 a pound. Nobody markets cars like that anymore.

It was $3,012 and weighed in at 3,012 lbs. It had a Ram Air IV 400 cubic in. 6.6 litre engine with the M22 4 speed and all the stock goodies (hood tachometer, Hurst shifter, rally wheels, rear spoiler) and came in that beautiful cobalt blue paint job.

My Dad bought it for my Mom so she could drive up the NJ Turnpike from DC for her dentist appointments. Don't bother asking, my Mom was a nuts about her dentists.

That car hauled ass. You could be going about 20-25 mph in second gear, floor it, and the rear wheels would just break free and burn rubber.

When I turned 16, I bought the car from my Mom and drove that car for years. In 1985, I bought another '68. Same specs, same features. $4,400.

My brother totalled that car and I never got over it. It was in near mint condition with only 50,000 miles. It would be worth close to $40,000 today.

I've had a love affair with that car for 30 years.

I'm in love with old VWs.

'68 Karmann Ghia...god I would love one of those.
Pre '70s bugs and buses too.

You really can't be serious. Nothin! E type Jaguar. How beautiful do you want? I love the look of many vintage American muscle cars, but we prefer something that can actually go round corners (OK, I'll admit, the E type doesn't do corners either). But come on, really. Even to this day, most American cars have suspension taken straight from a hay cart, not to mention the interior quality that's clearly formed from recycled Betamax cases.

WHAT!? You're having a laugh right? To name just 2:

Mark II jaguar convertible. I saw one of these the other day. Utterly epic.

This is literally just 2 of my favourite. Maybe neither of these cars have the "drag racing" cred that you clearly covet (they're certainly not slow) but i think that to say england has not made a single cool vintage car is just a horrificaly ignorant remark.

It's a shame really because i was about to say how much i love american muscle cars but this has pretty much ruined this thread for me.

That's modern design? Corvette - yes. Mustang - Maybe, but the Camaro and especially the Challenger are just updates to the retro. I especially hate the new Challenger. It looks like they took an old one and inflated it. It's a big heavy car.

My vintage picks would be

55-56 Chevy Nomad (something to carry the drums)
65 GTO - Tripower!
70 Chevelle 454
67-68 Camaro (hate the wings on the fenders of the 69)
Any Vette from the 50s-early 70s

And for an English car, how about the Ace from the 60s I think. That's what became the AC Cobra once they dropped in a real engine!

I have *always* wanted a 60's-era Camaro. The new ones are being designed w/ a similar look but it wouldn't be the same.

There's a neighbor down the road who owns a large towing company and he's got a '66, I believe. Red with a white trimmed striped on top, front-to-back. It's the sexiest car I've ever seen.

If you can't get a muscle car around a corner you're obviously not giving it enough gas. ;)

I appreciate this retro craze and all, but I don't want a car that has more computers in it than I have in my house. Being a software engineer that leaves a hell of a lot of wiggle room, but anything past 2005 is still shit outta luck. I like being able to fix my own car, man. What's that you say? Carbs aren't efficient? Eat a dick. At least I can fix the damn thing for under $1,000.

I know it's not necessarily in the same category, but I also like the early '70's Datsun 240Z. Drop a Chevy 350 in that little bastard and enjoy the crazy looks from innocent bystanders. And +1 to the AC Ace sans-sissy motor, otherwise know as the AC Cobra.

Zambizzi,
The easiest way to tell the Camaro years apart is the 67' ( there was no 66, only the GM proto-type was a 66') has round parking lights in the grille as well as side vent windows on the doors. The 68 (which I had and restored) had rectangular parking lights in the grille and no vent windows. The 69" has 3 "gills" on the side in the rear quarter that look stupid and serve no purpose. Love the 67-68.

Ah ha, thanks! I'll do some research. When I was a little younger, I wanted to rebuild one myself as a project. That'll never happen...so I'll find a fully functional one and buy it. I would like to learn how to work on it myself, though.

The new retro remakes have the "gills" too...they're ugly.

Back in the days of affordable gas (and high octane), I had a '67 GTO and a '67 442.
