Two new albums (death metal)

A few weeks ago I picked up two albums at my local store. I had waited a long time to pick these up, but right after Christmas I could afford it.

Dying Fetus - Descend into Depravity
This is an interesting album, I literally think it's one of the best death metal albums to grace my ears ever. It's brutal, fast, and unrelenting. It really shows that John Gallagher is only getting better with time. It also shows that Trey Williams is one of the most astounding and enduring drummers of our time. Maybe not advancing the craft but definitely showing what can be done with what's there today. Sean Beasley is also pulling out all of the stops, he shows some of the most technical bass playing and most politically charged lyrics of all time. This is a meaningful album if you're willing to listen to what's being said.

Nile - Those whom the gods detest
You want fast, we've got fast. This album is blinding, but also incredibly technical. Breakdowns driving from incredible speed to excessively slow drags. George Kollias takes death metal drumming to the next level all together with exacting technique and fills that combine a range of dynamic experiences with alternating rhythms. Dallas and Karl are, as usual, constantly reinventing what it means to be a guitarist, showing some of the best technical ability of our time. Sweeping patterns in this album take on a whole new definition as a true part of the music and not just frill. This is an album to look out for.

Mmm I love the new nile album, definitely better than their last effort. I saw them live a month or two ago and they play it all perfectly on stage, George is an absolute beast of the kit.

I resigned myself to the fact that new dying fetus wasn't worthwhile, but I'll check that album out after that glowing mini-review.

I've been trying to find fresh and unique metal recently, and I hit upon an emerging genre, which is death metal mixed with electronica, see what you think of these guys...

They use a drum machine unfortunately, but I find their compositions to be very unique and interesting, and pretty face melting at times.

That is really really interesting. Part of me feels like I should hate it, but I really dig it. Good call, You might enjoy Ted Maul if you're into this.

Ah yes Ted maul, very good band indeed, saw them live last year and they blew me away. Have you listened to Fleshgod apocalypse yet? Silly name but an awesome band.

I really liked Descend into Depravity for what it was, but I've never liked Nile, just because I don't respect Kolias as a drummer, frankly he hardly has any skill with anything but his feet.

And in my honest opinion, you're never going to get a technical death metal better than necrophagist. Muhammed is incredible, and Romain Goulon is one of the best drummers around. If you havent heard them, first off kill yourself, then when you've finished that, listen to this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SRD6mjrUMo&feature=related :D

Necrophagist is great. No lie, but kollias has all kinds of skill with all his limbs... watch the extreme metal drumming dvd...

Thank you for this well-thought out and quite enlightening post. It's truly a gem.

Yeah very true, he's more than just a high speed double bass player. Necrophagist are alright, very capable musicians but their not very good at writing songs. I prefer stuff like Ulcerate for my tech death, they know how to write good songs, when to slow down, when to use melody, dynamics etcettera. Jamie Saint Merat is an awesome drummer to...

I really enjoy Necrophagist, but that's got a lot to do with my classical background. Ulcerate is pretty killer as well, makes me feel like Neurosis meets Nile kinda. I really like Obscura as well, one of the best tech bands.

I went to see Cynic, Scale the Summit, and Devin Townsend Project the other night. I didn't like DTP's music recorded, but live.... it's incredible. All of those bands were killer. BTBAM was headlining... I ended up leaving during their set.

When you think you have heard it all, someone pops up and says Kollias hardly has any skills. Wow.. Didn't think I would actually hear that on a drummer forum

Love 'em both.
I don't know the name of Dying Fetus's new drummer, but he is a BEAST! I saw them a while back and they just tore the place up.

I really like Nile's new stuff, too. In many ways, it's been my favorite release from them in a while.
