EC resonants as batters

Ec resonant (1ply10mil ultra clear film with built in control ring)

Over the weekend I switched out my tom heads and put my
evans ec resonants on the batter side and used clear ambassadors as resonants.

You get the nice bright attack of a single ply clear head while
the attenuated overtones make for a thick dense open sound.

I'd put the tone right smack inbetween a clear emperor and clear ec2

It's like having a warm and deep sounding clear ambassador.

I think they are perfect as batter heads but I'd pair them with a brighter
un-muffled resonant head for better projection in live situations.

The ultra clear film is softer than the standard film so if you use 2b's and hit hard
they probably won't last very long.

I use 5b's and hit fairly hard and they are holding up well.
I'll post a sound clip here soon.

here's the soundclip of me bangin away on these heads
ec res over clear amb on the racks

the floor tom has an ec2 over an ec res
so it sounds kind of dull compared to the 12 and 13
but I have ec res on the way to try ec res over ec res on the floor tom.

enjoy

They sound really good. BTW, what drums are you running these on? Specs?

thanks!

they are standard size newer Tama imperialstars - cheap but effective.
poplar with dual 45 edges.

Tama did a great job on these - the only defect is a BB size nick in the bottom floor tom bearing edge but they tune up true and sing pretty good.

They really sing with coated ambassadors!!

my only concern is that (and i have no clue on this) i would assume the resonant head wasn't made quite as "tough" and may fail much quicker than a batter head due to the drum stick abuse? maybe? i've thought of doing the same thing but was hesitant because of that issue. :)

thanks!

I thought the same thing as the "ultra clear" film is definately softer then the standard
mylar - but I have had the heads on for about a week as batters (they were on as
resonants for like 8 months before that) and I have been actually bangin on them pretty good with 5b's and no sign of dentage - when I remove the heads I can see very
minimal dimples but they are holding up suprisingly well - not even close to "dished-out"
Matter of fact my 13" clear emperor has major dents....but I think that was when
I was using those those ball-tip sticks.

now....if you hit like a gorilla with 2b's or use those ball-tip type sticks
I imagine serious dentage or possibly breakage will occur.

Being it is softer mylar I also imagine they will just plain wear out/go dead quicker
so if long mileage is a concern - prolly not your type head.

I like to change and experiament with heads at least four times a year
(with the seasons yo)
I am already developing a good back stock of spare (half-used) heads
I give them away whenever I see a drum set that has been neglected
in the head deptartment.

Overly beat up old heads on a drum kit should be a crime!!! LOL

When these ec's wear out - I plan on trying clear g plus top and bottom
then after that I will try coated Ambassador x top and bottom

I'm really diggin using the same thickness head top and bottom.

WOW cool! sounds like a fun experiment. Man, i've seen people playing gigs with heads that resembled a golf ball - pitted so extremely! i've seen duct tape on heads, i've seen toms tuned so high that if someone dropped a quarter on them the thing would end up embedded in the ceiling.

some wackKo stuff out there!
