I am currently considering a yamaha DTXplorer for around $1000USD which is much cheaper than in retail because I'm getting it second hand. My main concerns is that whether it will actually last long and that does it really feel differently from actual drums?
I intend to play drums for a long time. Having said that i confess myself to be a beginner. Some advice on getting an e-kit or an a-kit will be good!

For starters who intend to go a long way but what kit would be good? I heard Tama Imperialstar is a good a-kit for it's price? Any suggestions? Imperialstar vs Yamaha DTXplorer?

Please help! Currently in a big dilemma.

P.S. I have space for either an e-kit or an a-kit!

E-kits are great if noise is an issue, if its not I would suggest an acoustic kit, E-kits can last a long time or a few days, they're electronic and we all know what can go wrong there, it depends on the brand how well its made and how you play and take care of it. You can get allot more bang for your buck going acoustic though. And yes e-kits have a different feel than acoustic. I have both.
Look at Guitar center and Musicians friend, they all have starter kits from good brand names many with stands pedals and cymbals, get a metronome, some are a free laptop download, you can get free drum lessons on line and take some hands on lessons as well. enjoy the journey.

here are a few acoustic kits complete

my vote goes for the Gretsch

Thank you for your advice! But do you think yamaha or tama is better? thanks so much! :)
Gretsch seems like a good choice! :)

Yamaha and Tama are both good, but your asking if a Yamaha electric is better than a Tama acoustic right?
I guess you need to figure out if you want an acoustic or electric first. Do a search here, there are many threads on the subject.
I have both and have to say I like the feel and sound of the acoustic more. If you dont know much about drums buying a used e-kit might be risky if you dont know what to look for, besides there are many new ones in that price range.

Hey thanks so much guys, your advice really helps!
I've actually looked at a couple of kits already, decided to go for an acoustic!
My budget is within a thousand, really hope to get decent ones within that range!

I found pearlforum 5 piece full kit (throne, hardware, 4 cymbals and all) for 700 or so!
Then there's the gretsch blackhawk 5 piecefull kit (just like above) for 600 or so!
And another selling gretsch blackhawk 5 piece (w/o throne but with rather lousy quality cymbals!) for 500!

Mind pointing me in the right direction as to where I can get better prices/ or better kits? Thank you guys so much!
Really appreciate it! :)

have you tried looking for used locally? or local music store, drum shops? Besides places like Guitar center, Musicians friend, music 123, Sam ash and places like that I don't know where you would find lower prices

Glad to see you are going acoustic. Any yamaha or roland kit you get for 1k will be inferior in terms of function to ANY 1k acoustic kit. The roland/yamahas ekits are well built, but lack dynamics, quality hi hats, and IMO no ekit feels like an acoustic.

Also, check used guitar center....you can check nationally and get something shipped to you. They have VERY good used prices sometimes. I think they have no pricing standards...one time an item will be $400...and another GC will have it for $500...so if you are persistent you can get a good deal on there sometimes. Have to be fast though.
