Sound clips for Drum Heads from Evans

Hey Drummers,

Looks like Evans has a helpful array of audio drum clips (they may have been there a while, I just stumbled across them).

At least it helps you compare WITHIN the Evans line. 4 different categories, and actually not bad reproduction. I was looking to remove more "Boing" from my G2's" Maybe the Coated EC2'S? I just don't want to add any tape or moonjelly.

If you want a less-decay tone without tape or moongel, the EC2s are an excellent choice.
Great, great head. Sounds like it's what you are looking for.
 
lol, if you go through and click all of the kick drum clips at the right time, you can almost pull off the inrto to hot for teacher..

Funny how you get so excited anticipating a great tone while your order is being shipped!
Then when you mount and tune...uh....

I guess I'll have to pound all 4 toms until the heads wear down so I can replace. At least drum heads are an affordable lesson.
 
Heads are the most important part of your tone equation. Much more than the drums themselves, IMHO. Don't wait until they wear out. If you don't like the tone, move on with other heads. :)

Time to go shopping (again). Just returned back from the music store with a Zoom H2 recorder!!!! (what time do they close :) ?
 
Yes! I just finished working on these recently (it's been quite the project, as you can imagine). As mentioned in the description below each profile page, now editing was done to the files in terms of compression or EQ so they are all raw from the sound source (mic configurations are also detailed on the same page). I strongly recommend listening on a good quality set of speakers/headphones for the most accurate representation.

Hope these serve as a helpful aid in researching drumheads!
 
I must admit to being a bit surprised when I gave a close listen to some of those samples. Thank you, Evans. I was considering trying G2s, but those ended up NOT being the sound I liked best.

Yeah - GREAT JOB! Extremely helpful for my upcoming EC2 selection (hoping for less "Boing" than the G2's)

Grabbed the Prosound Brass Strainer for my 13" Tama Artwood, along with the HD dry. Great suggestion, and managed to get it just bright enough by tightening EVERYTHING!

Any suggestions for the extreme snare buzz I'm getting on my DW 14" collectors that I put the Puresound 14" steel pros on? I adjusted both the reso and snare wires multiple ways?
 
Question for EvansSpecialist:

Can you comment and/or elaborate on how you prepared the bass drum heads?

I wondered especially how you approached dampening as you have pre-dampened and non-dampened heads in the line up. Was pleasantlyy surprised at the G2 as a bass drum choice.
 
Why are all the sound samples for bass drum heads done with burying the beater ? Not everyone plays that way. Burying, not burying the beater are 2 different sounds.

All bass drum samples were prepared with the EMAD Reso on the resonant side. The batter heads were matched in pitch in order to offer fair comparison between each head (except for the G1 which was given a bop tuning). No extra muffling was applied to the heads.

There are three samples for each of the drum heads. In the case of bass drum samples, the three samples were:
Bury the Beater
Hard hit w/Plastic Beater
Soft hit w/Felt Beater

The hard and soft hits were done without burying the beater.

I experienced exactly what EvansSpecialist posted. There were clearly marked different samples for all the different heads - not just bass drums.

Not sure why you didn't see those different samples and also hear the difference. I definitely did and appreciated that there were sample markings indicating as much.

Yes, I see that now. Yesterday for whatever reason those samples were blank. Probably my computer, I'm sure.

In re-reading my post, I realized it didn't do a good job of conveying what I meant to say, and might have come across kind of negative. What I intended was that I was surprised the G2s weren't my favorite, which is what I expected. Instead, I found I really liked the sound of the Power Center heads on the tom samples. Interesting, because I have not even considered buying a dot-type head since about 1980, lol! It's good to reconsider all your options periodically, I guess.

I have to say, the samples are a great idea. The only downside I found is that, to my ears, the chart showing relative characteristics isn't always as I would describe the sounds. For example, the hydraulic head is described as having a highly defined attack, and yet to my ear it has less attack than the EC2, which is rated the same. Also, the Power Center head seems to have a lot more attack to me than either the G2 or EC2.

That's why the samples are such a good idea, though. It's nearly impossible to verbally describe sounds in a way that is universally agreeable and understandable.

I found some of those problems with the charting too and started keeping track with my own notations and numbers. Listen closely with a good set of studio headphones and you'll catch all the nuances of the different heads. I was going for Power Center but G Plus won me over. I'm ordering them today. I have also been warned that outside the sweet-spot, the Power Centers can be a little rough. I don't know if that's true, or posted by an Evans hater.
