Show us your tiny kits

Since there is a "show us your monster kits" thread, for the sake of balance I thought it would be fun for members to provide photos of their minimalist kits. I'm thinking just one to three trips to the car to fetch.

Here is my baby:

drums-with-stompbox.jpg

I posted it on some other thread here so some of you will have already seen it, but this thread is maybe a better context because we can put the "babies" together in one creche :)

Since the photo was taken I've bought a tiny 10 watt IBZ10ZB bass amp for the stomp box. Does anyone know if it be slaved to a PA for gigs?

My only regret is that the kit's not in pink ...

As you may know, I'm obsessed with seeing dwarf monster kit someday - at least 9 pieces, none of them bigger than 18 inches, no cymbals bigger than 16 inches. Would such a kit count as a "tiny kit"?

These kits are huge! Let's get serious:

Cute kit, GD! What cymbals are you using?

DMC, I reckon 9 pieces is stretching the friendship a bit but your kits always look so good it would be wrong to deny the thread that kind of drum porn. My kit's getting huge too - 12" hats, 16" crash, 17" crash/ride, snare (with cascara), 16" kick, 12" tom, 8" tom ( I have the toms set backwards) and a djembe. I've pretty well disqualified myself from a thread I started!

Hey Khan, is that the setup you used on Black Halo?

I will be using the ones from my other kit. A Zildjian A 19 inch crash for a ride/crash and my 13 inch Masterwork Jazz series hats.

GD - I am loving that bumblebee kit! What make are the drums and did you finish it yourself?

Pol - No, I wish I could say yes, but I used a Keystone era Ludwig (in the studio already), I think 20,12,16 and a 14 snare and my 19" Agop Sig Istanbul ride, 16" AAX Dark Sabian Crash and some Ufip hi hats and a broken Zildjian A custom (was already in the practice studio) as the second crash/ride

Cephalic - Lovin the setup and the rocking out picture! (Are you alone on stage...?)

The drums are a Taye Studio Maple snare, a Pearl Forum Bass drum/converted tom, the 12 inch is a Ludwig Rocker, and the 13 inch tom/floor tom is a Pulse. A , or United Nations kind of kit . Like this forum, a little bit of everything. Cymbals will be a Zildjian A 19inch crash for a ride/crash and some 13 inch Masterwork Jazz series hats. I did the re-finshing and they look much better from afar.

Wow a real frankenstein! It looks great, you did an awesome job re-finishing it. Did you have someone do the custom bumblebee head?

For the bass drum/converted floor-tom, what are those lugs you have and did you simply have to put them on both ends and then do some drilling for the legs or was there more to it? Do you have a construction thread on this one?

I bought a kit that included spiked legs that go in the floor tom mounts, a riser for the pedal and a rail mount for putting a a tom on the bass drum. I used that to mount the cymbal. The Bumble Bee for now is just a cut out fro the web until I can get it painted on. I also bought the wood hoops, claws and t-rods on ebay.

Heya Polly,

Thanks for your feedback! I've posted a thread specifically for the suitcase kit here if you'd like to see a few more pics and a vid.

We re-inforced the inside of the suitcase with some aluminium, and bolted the pearl mounts on to the suitcase that way. It's solid as a rock to play, and is heaps of fun! I had my first gig with it here in the Queen Street Mall, and it attracted alot of attention, i'm going to re-wrap the shells in red, and but a little port in the front for a mic, but it sounds pretty good for what it is!!

Good idea to get everything to match, Trop.

It was hard for me to gauge the sound of the kick from the recording because the recorder was set to "tinny" :) So that's an RT drum in there? What size is it - a 14"?

Funny thing about RTs - they can sound a bit thin acoustically for rock but they respond really well to being mic'd up with the right EQ.

Heya Polly,

You're right, the recording doesn't really do it much justice, but i'm thinking of putting a PZM mic in there as it's a contact mic, it should pick up all the bass frequencies. Yeah, it's a 13" Rack tom that i've cut in half, the other half is my "floor tom". I didn't have to cut the 8" down, but I thought i'd keep it uniform with the other tom. Will show some pics when it's been re-wrapped.

Thanks for your questions!

Very inventive, Trop. And to think I thought my 16" floor was tiny :) What style of music are you playing with it?

The "suitcase" kit is amazing ...

Here is mine (not as cool as the Samsonite) as seen in use.

This was at an art gallery so it didn't need to be loud, it's a YAMAHA Katche Jr. kit with a Ludwig Supraphonic snare. we dispensed with using the rack tom and mounted a ride cymbal with the bracket, on occasion we don't even use the floor tom. On bigger gigs (small clubs played out of town and such we use the whole 4 piece kit) and that still makes for a pretty small footprint!

It's NOT me on the drums, it's WC Garrison who has played at one time or another with just about everyone in Memphis since 1965 ... that IS me on bass, drums are kinda a third instrument for me.
