I need a kick drum mic and two overheads. I can only afford three microphones right now and plan on using the "recorderman" technique with the two overhead mic. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm new to the forum and so far everyone has been super cool. Thanks

You should be able to find an AKG D112 for the kick drum, used, for under $100. You should also be able to find a couple AKG C1000 condensers for under $100 each, or you could "splurge" on a Rode NT1 or NT1000 for around $125--they will sound better, more like an AKG C414.

3 new sm57 for $99 each and voila. One in the kick and. 2 as overhead.

I've done this setup before and didn't get enough signal from the SM57s as overheads, and got a "non-representative" sound from the bass drum as well. I wouldn't recommend it.

If you wanted to get a Shure drum mic set, you can find the 3 SM57/1 Beta 52 sets used for around $200-250. That's if you wanted to use all 4 channels on your board with close miking. I would recommend a decent kick drum mic (AKG D112), and one decent condenser overhead (or two, if you want a stereo mix).
