Oz rock!

In the 70s and 80s Australia had a fantastic live music scene, full of dynamic, gig-hardened bands. Many at the forum would know little about Oz rock so, for them, it's a brief primer - for Aussies, a trip down memory lane:

Early clip of Midnight Oil - this one was on their debut album. They were the best bar band I've ever seen. Later they went on to play stadiums:

Another band that grew into stadiums, Cold Chisel. This tune was a hit for them:

Shock rockers, Jimmy and the Boys - one of the most outrageous bands on the circuit in the 80s. The singer is now into events management and disparagingly describes his period in the band as "an aberration" ... I thought they were awesome ... and they did a great version of Zappa's I'm the Slime too :)

Ayers Rock ... singer was dodgy but the musicianship was great http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGi6JwY658U

The only time I saw ACDC was at a local school dance ... they were killer and they did ok for themselves later on :) It was around this time:

If you'd like an encore with some more classic Oz rock bands, yell out MOOOOOOORRE!!!

Thanks for the connection Pol. Loving Jimmy & the Boys, very Tubes - esque. My first glance at the Ayers Rock clip, holy tom angles!!! But then I worked out it was another kit behind :) Some great bands there Pol, & you're right, under exposed for sure.

Cheers Andy - I saw all these bands live and they all put on a great gig. Never saw Men at Work live, Abe. Some others ...

The Angels in this vid have aged and don't have the energy of old but the chant after the chorus was happening way back - we Aussies are classy, eh? hahal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmur7-xjSCs

For something more sophisticated, Renee Geyer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T3ffYpaVjs - she always had studio players in her band.

Now a bit of soul with the Dynamic Hepnotics including Continental Robert on vocs and harp (a guitarist in one of my old bands played with Robert for a while in recent years): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJwNe6qvmMk ... we had a lot of good blues and funk playing the traps.

I was Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons many times - a killer blues, RnR and RnB band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC7GboypOhQ(sorry the sound on this vid is very low). Gary Young, the drummer, had formerly played with Daddy Cool ... you might have heard of them? Eagle Rock?? The tall baritone player, Wilbur Wilde, went on to be a well-known personality in a variety show band.

For something less mainstream, I saw Ed Kuepper's band, Laughing Clowns play a memorable gig at the Musos's Club ... ugly and cacophonous, but what a vibe! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9-Ut4FWwR8. EK originally hit the big time with a punk band, The Saints but then he branched out.

Do you remember the Valentines? Funny seeing Bon Scott in that role! Everyone starts somewhere!

I always liked Midnight Oil.

Oh - my - God ... I was a fan of that song as a young 'un but I never knew the name of the group ... or that Bon was in it! Good one, Mike!

How about some very early Accadacca in glam mode? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biaGJ_4rEzE

Yeah, the Oils were one of the best live bands I've seen, locally or touring acts. Did you hear the Oils' first two albums? I'm not normally big in indie/punk but their early stuff was special. They had a great rep around the raps before they hit the big time.

Did you ever hear of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs in the US? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtJq56cp_dk

This was the Holy Grail for a long time. saw this when it originally aired on The Smothers Brothers show and heard it on the radio shortly afterwards. of course a 9 year old doesn't remember the name of groups and stuff. spent the next 30 years trying to find out who it was.

thank God for the interwebz and the E! Channel. and thank God for 80's people (friend) who recognise the INXS / Jimmy Barnes connection.

Good grief - those Utah Mormon sisters rocked! lol

And The Easybeats's Friday on My Mind was covered by David Bowie.

But it wasn't all commercial. Never forget the first time I heard Mackenzie Theory on TV ... yes, they used to put music like this on TV once http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcfGFykxdjs ... the band included the talented Cleis Pearce on viola. She later on formed an amazing band called The Magic Pudding which I saw a couple of lines. I'll never forget the way she introduced one of the songs ... "This song is dedicated to the clouds ... because they are so wonderful". Cracked us up :)

But she can play like a demon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vnXZwzDLDo

i like Peter Frampton's "Friday On My Mind" - great album too that no one cared about in 1981. side one is a killer.

in the early 90's a DJ from back in the day (i took his Radio class) tried to tell me it was by Josie and the Pussycats. i like Josie too, great drumming...but that ain't who it were.

the first Mackenzie song sounded like the prelude to something good.

and yes... clouds are wonderful. : ) she's right.

have you ever heard the Have A Good Day album ? it's a monster all the way through. not only "White Bird", but it's loud and raucious and jamming and mellow too. reminds me of the Mackenzie Experiece.

And the second link IS something good!

Yes, of course clouds are wonderful ... but it's like saying water is wet lol

Nope, haven't heard of the album. Is it on da Tube?

The Mackenzie Experience? Is that like the Jimi Hendrix Theory?? hehehe

You mentioned Jimmy Barnes ... my favourite Cold Chisel song was One Long Day, tho it was mostly guitarist, Ian Moss, singing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP2pgx6iMi4

Before they were well known I was hanging out with some muso friends deciding what band to see and we saw Cold Chisel in the gig guide. We were saying "Cold Chisel? What sort of name for a band is that?" ... little did we know ...
