The YouTube tips thread

I've noticed a few things of late about YouTube linking that some might find useful:

1. Shorter links:

Let's take this YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h1oRP7FfBw&feature=related

It's pretty long and messy and a fair bit of it is unnecessary. All you need is the stuff before the ampersand (&). So this smaller, cleaner link will take you to the same place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h1oRP7FfBw

2. Sending someone to a specific moment in a video:

Say you want to just point out the great sax solo in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV-lBswnEvE. It's at about 3:18.

The link would be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV-lBswnEvE#t=3m16s

All you do is add a hash #=3m18s to the end of the URL.

If anyone else has some tips (including uploading / editing / etc), this might be a good place to post them.

If you right click on the red time bar in a video, it will bring up a list of options, one of those will be to copy the video url at the current time you clicked. So if you click at 1:57 then it'll give you an url that instantly links to 1:57 in the video.

A few very solid tips. I've never really trusted shortened URLs for some reason (i.e. your bit.ly links and etc.) unless I knew it was from someone legitimate. But Youtube's become everyone's visual resource, so seeing "youtube" in the actual URL is a lot more comforting. Good lookin' out on this one people.

this is great info - I send and post links to YouTube all the time
