Veteran drummer Roger Pope has died at the age of 66.

The respected musician, who played in bands with Sir Elton John, Hall & Oates, Sir Cliff Richard, and Nilsson, passed away this month (Sep13) after a battle with illness.

Born in Kent, England, Pope was playing drums in bands by his mid-teens and working as a session musician, and in the late 1960s he became one of the founding members of cult rockers Hookfoot.

His studio work included sessions for Sir Elton, and he played on the Rocket Man's debut album Empty Sky before joining the star on the road as part of his backing band in 1975.

During his career, Pope also played with blues star Buddy Guy, singer Kiki Dee, and folk singer Al Stewart.

It is believed he passed away at a nursing home in the south of England.

Never forget those very Levon-esque Thermogloss Walnut Ludwigs he had in 1975.

Very sad, 66 isn't old at all. And in a nursing home to boot. That's less than 10 years away for me, I can't even imagine it.

A great player though, most familiar with his work with Elton, and Howard Werth.

I would say from it he had not been in the best of health lately.

Found a radio interview he did in England from a few years back, he tells a interesting story while playing on the "Madman Across The Water" album, and a song that he had recently played on by a local artist is played. Still had the beat.

According to this site, unfortunately it was the Big C that took him from us. The OP there said he got the info from Caleb Q.

Now in tribute I think I am going to put on Disc 2 of "Captain Fantastic" (that has the 6/21/75 Wembley Stadium show).

Hmmm, thanks, good story. His life a shorter one, but a full one. Who would figure that a humble session drummer would be the 'magnet at a party'.
