EMAD plastic ring split?

I am an Evans user. All the way around my kit. If my drum shop doesn't have the head I need, I drive to one that does instead of getting any other brand. I use an EMAD 2 Clear batter on my 24" kick and an EMAD resonant and LOVE the sound, no muffling needed.

That being said, I have never been able to get a decent life out of my EMADs. The plastic ring that holds the muffling ring always splits and I can hear the difference in tone and a slight clicky buzz of the plastic vibrating after it splits. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have never found the sound I wanted until I used the EMADs, but this is getting crazy! Also what's the deal with not offering the ONYX EMAD in 24"?

Was an Evans user myself until I found that I could get Aquaian for less money and they lasted twice as long and sound just as good if not better.

Correct me if I'm wrong here: Evans redesigned the plastic ring. It has a less sharper angle where the ring slides underneath. This has supposedly fixed the issue. Try a new EMAD but make sure the plastic edge is the new one.

I believe that they redesigned them about a year ago. Maybe you got a new, old stock head before the current design change. That 24" head could have been sitting for some time.

Precisely the reason I don't use EMAD on any bass drum that doesn't leave the studio/practice room/rehearsal space. If the ring breaks, it rattles when you hit the head. If it never breaks, it's one of the best sounding bass drum heds you can buy.

I had pretty good success with Powersonic. But you're an Evans Guy. So buy an EQ1 with a felt muffling strip and play away!! Or EQ4 that one's nice, too.

We did in fact redesign the plastic fixture that holds the foam rings. I will PM you to get your mailing address so I can send you a replacement head.

Thanks,
Ben

I just responded to another post about these heads. I too use the EMAD 2's and have always had a problem with the plastic retaining ring. It's annoying to say the least. Unfortunately, because I love the sound it produces, I keep buying them. I can honestly say that to date (and for reference I just bought one approximately 4 months ago) that the problem on my latest head has reared it's ugly head again. My typical short term solution is to get out the duct tape and make a small "fix" to the ring, but I really shouldn't have to do that. Giving Evans the benefit of the doubt, it's altogether possible that I bought a NOS head. I have to ask, is there any way to visually identify the new design so the next time I buy one I'll know to stay away from the old design?

There are no definitive markings and the change is difficult to identify without comparison. As I mentioned above, if you have an issue with the plastic ring before the reasonable lifespan of the head is up, please let me know and I'll replace it for you.

Thanks!

As I said in the other thread when both of my kicks went (at the same time after I stripped, cleaned and retuned them - they didn't like being handled apparently) I contacted Evans UK and had my new heads within a week.

Great customer service!

I just wanted to give a public, big THANK YOU to EvansSpecialist. Your company is amazing and I can't thank you enough for the free head (that's more innocent than it sounds). I am an Evan's user for life!
