We used what we could find around the house.
When I first started to play, I wanted a wooden Ludwig drum pad. Im sure that you remember what they looked like back then. They had suction cups on the bottom and the rubber pad was glued to a slanted piece of wood. Forget It! My parents wouldn't go for that. It cost $20.00.
I cut and old bicycle inner tube into rubber strips. I taped the rubber strips to an old book. ( I think that it was one of "The Hardy Boys" volumes) I set the home made drum pad on one of those slanted student desk and chair combinations, and that was my practice pad.

A few years ago I bought one of those vintage ludwig drum pads just so that I finally could have one!
