Re: Mahogany Shells (Gretsch Catalina Club Mod)
I dont know why Gretsch still use the term mahogany for their Catalina Club mod because for anyone information, Gretsch is talking about Philipine Mahogany or Luan (meretti), these aren't African Mahogany, I repeat Gretsch Club mod are Asian Mahogany which is less harder & dense than real African mahogany.
Now the sound of Asian Mahogany is closer to birch, it does have a warm tone but less resonance, projection & punch than birch. The response spectrum of these shell is smaller than birch or maple, in other words, it require harder strokes in order to get the optimal tone of these less sensible shell.
