Seems to me like you have a bad attitude and you're not looking at the big picture. It's not about you. It's about the production as a whole. If you're playing too loud and people are noticing, good for them. That means you need to play softer and let the other instruments speak. How you used to play is irrelevant now. Maybe putting the shield in front of you during a service was a little harsh, but from the sound of it, you gave them no other option.
I played in the worship band all through high school and was always being told to play softer. Of course I took it the wrong way and held a grudge. But I was young and just wanted to be heard. As I've gotten older I've come to understand the concept of an ensemble. I'd suggest listening to your band leader.
