I was just listening to an album of Chet Baker and Art Pepper recorded in 1956 with Stan Levey on drums. Stan was a staple of the West Coast "Cool School" of jazz. He played with a good number of the greats of that era. Listening to this album just reminded me of what a tasty drummer he was and though he never acheived the fame of Shelly Manne he was arguably just as important in the development of the West Coast scene. If you're not familiar with him, you may want to check out some of his stuff. Not necessarily a "chops master" but played exactly what each tune needed.
